Made a slight design change a couple of days ago. At first I was going to mount the purlins on top of the beams. Decided on a more streamlined appearance for the soon to be new shade so I'm butting the purlins flush with the beams. That being the case...I am adding some angle iron ears to give me more meat to weld to. Took just over a half day to get 16 (8 to go) of them cut, marked, ground, clamped and welded into place. Sun beating down on a black welding helmet makes one a little dizzy after awhile. Quit for the day when it reached 102 in the shade (which I ran out of). Brief sprinkle from 3-4PM. 97,108,72, .02",B

John,
I saw on tv (National Geograhic channel) a story on a family in Arizona that had an old medium size swimming pool that had a "closed loop pond and garden" (with fish and chickens) with hydroponic watering system. That was the best system I have ever seen. The chickens poop over the pond, the fish in the pond (deep end of the pool eat the poop) The algae on the water cleans the water, the water gets pumped up to the vegetable plants at the shallow end of the pool. Any water left over drips back down into the pond. Its almost perfect.
I will dig around and get website for thease people so you check it out.
John heres the link. Hope it works for you.

If it does not work, do a web search for "Mcclung family Arizona". Several news stories come up. The tv on Natgeo was called "Doomsday Preppers"
It will air again on July,30@7:00pm
One of the most expensive phrases in the Construction trade...
"Design Change"
I like the streamlined design change. Looks like it wont be long 'til you have a nice shady spot there. I imagine that you, Benita, Mr. Floppy, et al, will be vying for space under there! Can't wait to see the finished product.
The system that Captain Crunch is talking about is sometimes referred to as "integrated aquaculture". I heard a spot on BBC News a number of years back where they introduced this system in some parts of Africa, to get more protein into the diets of people living in marginal areas. They would grow corn on raised rows between canals of water, with catfish in the canals. They would feed the catfish a small portion of the harvested corn, and all that water in the canals would keep the corn plants irrigated. Sounds pretty innovative.
