trying to concentrate...

Just sealed the deal today for a 10' satellite dish from my buddy Jesse (the CHL instructor).  He has an old dish that he no longer wants that was used by the previous owner back when they had to be this big.  This might end up being a solar concentrator to heat water to be stored up for the greenhouse during the cold winter nights.

Following on that theme, Just Me needed frames put together for some fresnel lenses she has.  We are going to try to do a solar weenie roast on Saturday at tffnguy's.  Whipped the first one together then played with it all afternoon.  Used my welding mask because that spot it makes is really bright not to mention HOT ( 1026.8 degrees F).  Actually melted some of the dirt it was pointing at.  97,101,69,0,B

John, there's still plenty of C-band Free-to-Air Satellite TV channels out there. I believe all the music channels on most Sat. TV services are actually free and there's also a lot of free non-mainstream news and talk coming from satellites.

Yeah, she tried to burn up a perfectly good sheet of thermal OSB with one of those over here one time. I had to scold her. ;)

BTW they don't have to be full focus to cook. Focused big enough to cook maybe 4 dogs at a time would probably work great.

At those temperatures, you might think about the possibilities of a solar kiln.

I remember seeing solar concentrators that we being experimented with in the 18th and 19th century.

interesting technology

John, ditto Carlos on the C-band. You can get raw feeds and all kinds of stuff. I miss my big dish but it was a bit of a pain keeping it aligned.

Being in the country but not near as remote as you, after digging the hole and mixing and placing 24 bags of concrete mix for the foundation and running the extension cord from the house with the 13" TV to calibrate alignment, it was like magic receiving the signals from the sky surrounded by cow patties. One of my favorite memories for sure.

Compared to that incredible roof you just put up, the amount of solar energy from the comparatively small surface area of that dish is minimal unless you use it to produce really hot water for washing dishes or other sanitary purposes. . . steam distillation system perhaps? Blow us away!

You should read Rob Cockerham's Light Sharpener experiments:

Will you be doing a live feed from tffnguy's place? If so, let us know the time.

Gonna Take One Hell of Vessel at those temps.

I think the amount of BTUs that dish will generate is going to be staggering. You might be amazed at the water heating system you can create with that thing!

What amazing potential for this technology. You could heat a lot of water with that thing. You could point it at a covered Dutch Oven and do a lot of cooking. Yes, lots of possibilities.
