cold'n'crappy

Gusty all night last night and chilly/cloudy/windy all day. Good day to stay inside and get a couple of steps closer to launching the new web cam. Getting close....but they sure don't make it easy. Mark this day on your calendar - the Field Lab dug up the heater out of storage this afternoon and fired it up for the first night of the winter heating season. Normal weather reporting a bit screwy today....our high temp ( 65.5 ) happened at 1:44AM...low temp yet to happen but its currently 48 degrees and falling. Got just a brief sprinkle this morning.

  1. Yeah... Not a nice day at all. I need to find out if there is a place around here to get the small RV propane tanks filled before I get in trouble. Know of any places in Study Butte?

  2. All the sunshine and warmth followed Betty. Frost on cactus pictures? Frost on Benita whiskers? Aw, it probably won't get THAT cold. Yet.
Your heater looks like a little jukebox.

  3. Those little heaters seem appealing for their value; 4,000BTU indoor/9,000 BTU outdoor and for about $70 it look like a good deal. Unless you store the tank outside it would bother me to think about possible propane leaks unless you have some kind of detector or something to watch for it. It is still cool though...

  4. tffn - Propane tanks can be refilled at Study Butte Store. Might be worth calling them first to check days/hours that they have someone there for the propane. You can find them in the online telephone directory at the Big Bend Telephone website.

Scavenger - That leak detector for the propane heater is called your nose. Yes, if you stay inside with the heater from the time you start it, you can get de-sensitized. Chalk up another point in favor of outdoor toilet facilities. If there's a propane leak, you'll notice when you return from nature's call.

  7. Seems old man winter is spreading his misery around early this year for a lot of us. Mr Heater can keep you warm but Ms Heater is a lot more fun :o)

  8. It seems one of the most important last ties to corporate produced and purchased energy that is not renewable thru off grid living is heat during winter. I wonder how feasible is a way to use solar evacuated tubes that are reasonably priced, though may pose a problem due to heavy hail although homemade solar collectors may suffice, and 12 volt DC electric hot water heater elements feed by wind/ solar voltaic to keep a very well insulated water holding tank that circulates its stored hot water thru radiators or radiant heat loops under the floor for partial or full heating for savings and more self sustainability.
