RIP Bob

Poor ol' Bob didn't make it.  She went back to water overnight and drowned.  Since my swamp killed his mama - I had one choice.  As soon as I found her, I went to get her 2 week old calf where I knew she had parked it.  Took a half hour to get him to take to the bottle, then he followed me home.  Penned him up, gave him two more feedings, then spent an hour in the pen with him to bond.  78,93,70,0,B,0

  1. Bob must have known her calf would be safe with you. You are a very kind person JW. A big "thank you" for taking care of them all.

  2. What a shame! Thank goodness you saved the calf. Life in the world of Long horns and TX critters is always rough

  3. I was watching the video feed this afternoon, with Boblet wandering around his pen, asking myself whether this was Field Lab: Project Veal.

It turns out to be Longhorn Rescue. I predict that John will have, in a few years, a most terrifying yet tame Guard Bull roaming the grounds.

    Good work, hombre.

  6. I've been shamelessly following your blog every day for a year now. But you're now, officially, my hero!

  7. Promise us that this one gets a GPS transmitter, okay, Dr. Doolitle of the Desert?

And I guess it's probably time to change the signs out front, whip up a new silkscreen for the tee shirts and register the new name with blogspot too, doncha think?

Because it's absolutely 100%, positively, officially The Field Zoo now and there's no going back. ;-)

  8. I think "Cow1.jpg" is one of the most powerful photos I've seen. In your situation, right and wrong aren't complicated things to figure out. What you did was the ONLY thing to do. I tip my glass and hat to you.

  9. what do other animals do while rain pouring ? (Floppy, -his donkey friends if still arround there-, Carl) ? this calf adoption looks going to be very interesting as it will be growing up through first/second year...Benita heritage being highly honored, FL will be very bussy . Admire impressive power of Nature, wildlness and desert, there at the GREATER BigBend Areas . Driving by tomorrow from Alpine to Madera Canyon to visit my mother s Ashes and reconnect my soul with Nature and life energy for the coming School year that might be the last one before I retire. Yur FL recent events and life do have a powerful impression in my thoughts today. Thanks for sharing them.

  10. To bad about Bob. We all lose friends and it doesn't seem to matter whether they are human or animal, the loss is still great. My condolences.

  12. I can just add this right on to the plan I was talking about 2 days ago in the post about Bob. We can add to it God set your friend up to come visit you to then come across this cow. We can back up beyond this and go to the birth of the calf , I say God knew and planned it all out. For taking Benita God has given you another. And now we see the whole plan come together. Isn't this I mean just amazing, wonderful, It is absolutely the best experience seeing plans fall into place. Praise God. Awesome stuff . Congrats

  19. I am so sorry that Bob did not make it after the rescue and all.

You did a good thing to go find her young one and to be taking care of him. It takes a very kind and sensitive person to do that.

  20. So, since his mom was named "Bob", will the little bull's name be "Alice" or what? He's lucky to have a new mom in the person of you. Yet another thing you're good at is coming up with new critter names....

  21. RIP Bob! You'd better geld the calf before it gets much bigger. Longhorn bulls are even worse natured than their mothers once they figure out they are bulls.
