  1. Had a recent visit from 13 burros and a hinny running with the herd. After having helped themselves to a bale of Ben's alfalfa, I chased them off with the drone. The one that looks like a horse is the hinny - an equine hybrid that is the offspring of a male horse, a stallion, and a female donkey, a jenny. It is the reciprocal cross to the more common mule, which is the product of a male donkey, a jack, and a female horse, a mare. Burro is the Spanish word for donkey and the names are interchangeable - although "donkey" generally refers to a domesticated burro. 3. Those burros can now be found on most parts of the TERLINGUA RANCH.. But forty years ago - we never saw them except close to the Rio Grande River. We even saw a large herd of burros this fall in our Nine Points Mesa Valley just north of Jack Eden Mesa!. The Game Management wardens do not want them in the National or State Parks - because of competition with native big game species & they seem to have found a new home on the TERLINGUA RANCH. Wonder how a young one would taste cooked over some nice juniper wood coals? Probably a lots better than our jackrabbits! And best of all - there is no closed season!

  4. Interesting. Some Asian people eat horse meat which we have shipped to them. I think that would be an acquired taste.

  5. Split hooves and chews the cud, for it to be a clean animal...Steve has it spot on. Great video John. Quite a few left and right handed ones in that herd, notice the rear feet placement.

  7. Excellent video.. perhaps even better if you went up high to show surrounding terrain then zoom down to ground level.

It appears they did pay attention to the drone and ran... makes me wonder if they'd react that way to other big "birds"... or is there something about the drone (perhaps noise of a lot more movement, etc? If you can "herd" burros does that mean others could herd sheep or horses or cattle or other herding critters? Then, of course, someone probably already has equipped one with a gun so they can hunt with the drone? perhaps... other things.. like shooting with birth control or tranquilizers...to tag.. etc?

We're just beginning to scratch the surface with all the potential good.. and bad uses of drones.. probably could have found Benita quicker though outcome may not have been different.

The military is already assembling "swarms' of drones that connect with each other and coordinate their actions...!!!

  8. @Larry

Through the use of AI, the military already has autonomous drones capable of killing. They are even developing one with facial recognition that can search out a specific person on a crowded city street and kill them. Imagine the day when instead of sending troops into battle, they release a fleet of drones – both ground and air based. There will be little if any defense against such weapons. Well, that day is upon us. And in the not too distant future, there will be drones operated by police forces that will do the work of law enforcement in the US. When Elon Musk and others warned about the dangers of AI, they were spot on.

I've been working on my trap and skeet skills with the 12 ga.

  9. well... like all other technology. cat is out of bag...toothpaste out of tube... we're not going back.. both sides will have drones.. so then what does that mean... is the objective to still hold a position or will the drone change the whole paradigm?

and yes.. domestic criminal type bad guys are going to have to up their game if there are drones following them around! but even crooks will figure out how to use drones to improve their performance!

It's this aspect that we are just beginning to realize ... and figure out how to engage drones and defeat them...
