That is a Lazuli bunting. Western Bluebirds are insect eaters. I have them on posts looking for insects to fly down and grab but never been on any of my seed feeders. We have only seen the Lazuli Buntings on rare occasions in the Sierra Foothills.
Def not a lazuli bunting! That huge beak tells the tale. I've never seen the Blue Grosbeak, only Black-headed and Rose-breasted, also stunners. Great sighting and I hope (know) you're providing water for these birds too.

ReplyDeleteGrelin: I believe your ID is close...but I'm pretty sure it is a Blue Grosbeak.
ReplyDeletePhew! At last a comment. I thought we were going to have 7 days (one week) without a single comment. Thank you Mr Grelin for breaking the dry spell.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the identification. Haven't seen a Blue Grosbeak, only the Black-headed Grosbeak.
ReplyDeleteLooked fairly happy to me, not blue at all...
