Celebrating 6 years in the desert by going above and beyond. Thanks to 4 production companies that courted me for some reality TV in the past year (all of which I blew off in the end), I am indulging myself with a rather extravagant Christmas present. Just ordered a Fresh Breeze Simonini 122 paramotor and an Edel Power Atlas paraglider. Hope to schedule training at TFL in March or April. The really good news is I think I am now blacklisted by reality TV producers due to my silly demands of wanting cash only, wanting final approval on what would be aired, and not allowing my rights to be signed away "in perpetuity, throughout the universe" (actual wording on one of the contracts they tried to get me to sign). I will only allow them rights for 5 years and on Earth only. Forever is an awfully long time and I need to keep my options open in case I get a better offer from extraterrestrials.

TFLSP?
The Field Lab & Space Port?
You look better now than when you moved out there. Too bad you lost your dog so soon after moving. Have fun with the new toy and be safe, you hear?
Congrats!
Congratulations on 6 years in the desert. I hope to be out there full time one of these days. Now don't get impatient and try to fly that thing before getting trained!
Happy 6th Anniversary. Can we just leave it at that? Do you REALLLLY have to go in to outer ranch?
its time to fly my friend!!!!!
Please be careful so I can continue following your journey in the desert.
as Buzz Loneyear might say: "to infinity and bend on…" or something sorta kinda similar. Being your own agent, lawyer & gaffer seems to be working - make sure those would be producer/suitors have feet and not hooves in their boots… they'll be back - gotta keep the airwaves filled.
nano nano
Hilarious! Personally I'm glad your life is not going to be the subject of a reality show. I'm sure the $$ would be welcome but hey...stay pure.
A free man like myself, smart move.
Some folks recognize mammon when they see it.Congrats on the anniversary...get yer wings !
Remeber John Denver and don't get so excited about flying your new toy that you forget to actually learn how first.
Should have gotten the trike. That unit requires you to strap it on your back, then run into the wind until you hopefully get lift from that parachute. I watched a guy do that one day ... he ran into the wind 3 or 4 times and then collapsed on the ground. He was certain he was going to have a heart attack ... and quit for the day. Hope you are in good running shape ... :-)
I was a helicopter pilot / CFII in a past life. This or an auto-glider is actually safer then the a small kit helicopter because you are already in a state of gliding if the engine quits. If your engine quits in an R22 Helicopter you have 2 seconds to figure out what the hell happened and lower the collective. I know, I crashed one, so anything smaller then an R22 is death because there is not enough mass in the rotor system to store the inertia needed to perform a successful autorotation. I think this is the smartest decision if you are limited in funds and want something to tool around in. Just fly on good weather days.
John Denver's accident was due to fuel starvation followed by a low level stall/spin of a just purchased Long-EZ experimental design. The fuel valve was located behind his shoulder, and he couldn't figure out how to switch tanks. A powered paraglider's biggest safety concern is an in-flight canopy collapse resulting in the pilot plummeting to the ground. Both are typically fatal. I'm sure John is aware that his first flight could be his last. Good luck.
Have fun, but please stay safe.
Just remember its a lot better being on the ground wishing you were in the air than being in the air wishing you were on the ground.
Here's hoping you have many safe flights.
Happy anniversary!
John, I'm sure that leaving your old life there were people that said moving to the desert was suicidal. Your plan sounded solid when we visited in August and you don't seem any more ready to meet your maker now. Have fun learning to glide and always put safety first. Congratulations on your anniversary, and I'm glad that you are doing things your way for broadcasting your lifestyle.
Just remember, "Take off is optional. Landing is mandatory".
