watch and pray

We are all prisoners of earthly desire...

Watch and pray,
that ye enter not into temptation:
the spirit indeed is willing,
  but the flesh is weak.

the watershed...

Big storm just grazed TFL with .03" of rain but it hammered the watershed area east of me - white water rapids flowing through my canyon now.  I have a feeling the part of my road closer to the highway is in pretty bad condition.  Drone road check in the morning.  Good news is no more rain in the forecast for the next 10 days.   71,88,69, .03",B

Don't be a lost sheep...

Psalms 119  173 Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts.  174 I have longed for thy salvation, O Lord; and thy law is my delight.  175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me.  176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

Happy Fourth Of July

FYI - you are welcome on our shores if you come here legally.  It should be noted that you will have a much more difficult time if you sneak across the border.   It is certainly sad that your country sucks so bad that you feel a need to escape but you need to be aware that there are A LOT of people wanting to come here from countries that suck so you will just have to wait your turn in line.  Many of those entering the US don't have a legitimate asylum claim and many of them are outright criminals so you can blame them for the heightened security measures at our border.  It also helps if you have some money (hint - don't spend thousands on someone to smuggle you into the country).  By being allowed to become legal citizens here it is imperative that you become a contributing member of society so the tax payers won't have to support you in your new life in America.  It is also greatly appreciated if you bother to learn our local language.  92,99,76,0,B

the road paved with good intentions...

Since I have been out here, the county has resurfaced HWY 118 three times.  It seems to happen every four years.  I avoided going to Alpine until they finished this time since I got some cracks in my windshield from flying rocks last time when I made the trip while they were working on it.  A different contractor did this resurfacing and they did a really good job and finished the 60 mile stretch from just north of the ranch road all the way to Alpine in about a week.  91,101,71,0,B

where the magic happens...

Just got a new cast iron griddle to absorb and hold more heat in the solar oven.  Also made an adjustment to the swiveling shelf by raising it an inch.  The shelf stays level as the oven is tilted to catch the full on sun.  Have to make a run to the hardware store tomorrow.  The inside is due for a fresh coat of high heat black spray paint.  96,100,78,0,B

new propellers...

I kept getting turbulence warnings on that last road check flight with the drone even though it was relatively calm.  Thought it might be a good idea to put on some new propellers.  According to the flight logs, in the past year the Mavic Pro has flown 127 missions for a total of over 133 miles and almost 18 hours of flight time - and not a single crash.  91,97,73,0,B

The size and age of all...

If you think believing in God is a stretch, try wrapping your head around the fact that we are but a tiny speck in an expanding universe that is 13.8 billion years old and the observable parts of it are 46 billion light years away.  The good news is accepting Christ is all you have to do to know God is real...a lot easier than accepting the size and age of where He placed us...

mattress day...

Well...I fully expected to be hunkered down inside all day with the predicted rainstorm - but that didn't happen (yet).  Had nothing planned so I came up with a long overdue chore to attend to.  Dragged my beast of a mattress outside to clean (hydrogen peroxide, water, baking soda, dish soap) and air out for the day.  It is quite a chore to move it as it is rather bulky and takes up a quarter of my living space inside the hut.  It also gave me the opportunity to repair some wiring that was hidden beneath it - my kitchen light hasn't worked for over a year.  88,100,76,0,B

another flat...

Another busy a tire done this morning at Terlingua Auto, baked super cookies all afternoon, and prepped a batch of hard white wheat bread dough to bake tomorrow.  I had a non-repairable flat last weekend on an almost brand new Hankook Dynapro tire I bought from Discount Tire Direct.  (And please don't bother to tell me about your super tires - I already know about them.)  When I bought a couple of these for my truck in April, I paid $16 extra for a Certificate for Refund or Replacement for each tire - good for 3 years no matter how many miles you put on them. A 5 minute phone call last Saturday and my free replacement with free shipping arrived on Wednesday.  A very good deal and painless customer service.  91,97,73,0,B

How much is enough?

Put another 400 watts of solar into service today (1,200 total now for my main system).  Figuring out how much solar one needs is always a bit tricky - especially when using items that require AC voltage from an inverter. The good thing is, solar can be modular and you can keep adding panels until you have enough to feed your electronic comforts - and multiple charge controllers can feed the same bank of batteries.  These three sets go to three different charge controllers all hooked up to one battery bank.   My 5,000 Btu air conditioner is rated at 115 VAC and 4.6 AC amps. Using this online converter I figured out my air conditioner is pulling almost 50 DC amps out of my solar system.  With the latest addition, I am now pumping in about 66 DC amps during peak hours which keeps me ahead in the energy game when I require extra cooling in the hut.  The really good news is that we have cooler temperatures and some good chances of rain headed this way for a week starting Saturday.  Now it's time for storm prep.  92,99,73,0,B

Enjoy the ride?

So social media is flooded with "suicide awareness" this week. FYI - almost 100 regular people kill themselves every day in the US - but a couple of celebrities off themselves and suddenly everyone is all about suicide awareness?  I think Matt Walsh hit the nail on the head here.  This quote from Anthony Bourdain that has been making the rounds on Facebook sends a very dangerous message straight from Satan.  With a life philosophy like that, it's not surprising that Bourdain chose to end the ride....

1 Corinthians 6 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Romans 12: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Been doing a lot of baking with the solar oven this year so I thought I would freshen up the outside with a new skin.  Discovered the excessive heat has taken quite a toll on the insides - even through a layer of sheet metal (this charred piece was the bottom of the oven).  As bad as it was, the good news is the flash point of wood is 572° so it's doubtful the oven would have ever gone up in flames (although that would certainly make for a good video).  Getting parts and extra insulation tomorrow so I can start baking again by the weekend.   Just ordered aluminum plate and ceramic insulation for the smaller solar ovens I will be selling soon.  100,108,71,0,B

How shall they be judged?

So the lost donkey story had a happy ending today.  He just got picked up and transported to his new home.   A group of folks are starting a rescue operation for local livestock that gets cast aside or left to die (which happens a lot out here).  Proverbs 12:10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

Lost Donkey...part II

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to have pets.  Back in 2016, some folks I know out here adopted a burro that had been put out by his two previous owners.  Well this morning that burro stopped by for a visit and looked very malnourished so I fed and watered him then did a little digging.   Seems the couple that took him in have recently split up and left all their livestock behind.  Someone took in a horse and miniature donkey but the burro was just put out to fend for itself.   I have had my worries about this family since they moved here as they are also raising a teenage son (from a previous union) and very young daughter.  I don't know what mom's perpensity for alcohol is, but the father has rarely been seen without a beer in his hand.  Some of their acquaintances suggested that turning out the burro was the best way for it to survive.  I don't know about you, but he looks half starved to me.  As far as I am concerned, only a selfish asshole allows a domesticated animal loose to just go fend for itself - especially out here.  I don't care what their personal circumstances are.  They had a responsibility to make sure ALL their pets were taken care of.  99,105,77,0,B  UPDATE:  Some friends of mine have stepped up to the plate and are going to adopt all 3 of the animals that were left to fend for themselves.  This burro is getting picked up tonight and taken to a good home where he will be well cared for.  Just baked a batch of super cookies for them.

more panels

Finally prepping to put another 400 watts of solar into service.  I think I bought these panels about 4 years ago and they have just been sitting in their boxes (not very effective) since then.  I was short a combiner cable but finished bolting them down in time to order one from Amazon Prime around noon in order to get it delivered tomorrow.  Not quite sure where or how these will get permanently mounted yet and will decide that after I see how much more I will need to keep up with my AC.  Either it's getting hotter out here or I am getting soft in my old age. My almost 8 year old HP "All In One" computer finally shit the bed today.  Ordered a new one that is twice the speed and four times the storage space for half the price ( still gotta love Moore's Law).  Luckily I just backed up all my images and videos that were on it about a month ago.  Pulled the hard drive out and will see what else I can salvage from it when I get the new computer tomorrow.   89,95,63, .03",B

State of The Water Supply Address

Last time I had a good rain out here was last year on December 6th (.65").  Since then I have only had .24" of rain in almost 5 1/2 months.  Might get a little rain Sunday and Monday so I figured this was a good time to check my tanks.  Out of a total storage capacity of 20,400 gallons, I currently have 11,150 gallons on tap.  I am almost half empty (or half full).   95,102,68,0,B

Pure Sine Wave

Since I seem to be going soft in my old age, it was time for a little upgrade to my Frankenstein solar system.  Just tested out a new 3,000 watt pure sine wave inverter to run my 5,000 Btu air conditioner in the afternoon.  Although Pepino is still a real gem keeping me cool overnight into mid morning, it just can't keep up with my comfort zone in the blazing hot afternoons this time of year.  The test went flawlessly and my solar ran the AC just fine.  Up until now, I have had to run the AC for a couple of hours in the afternoon off my generator.  90,99,65,0,B
