pump out

Pepino's pump pooped out.  Just happened to have a replacement on hand.  Only got one year out of the last pump.  It is set to cycle 9 seconds every 4 minutes...which is about 6300 times per month.  The new AC is really taking the edge off.  I run it from 3 - 6PM and it chills the hut down to 74°.  Math quiz:  How many hours a day is Pepino turned on?  95,100,71,0,B

A few seconds shy of 32 minutes a day (24 hours) based on a 30 day month
Might be the answer lol

I came up with 14 hours, but that can't be right, can it?

I'd go back to the drawing board, but I'm only good for about one cycle of four minutes of math per day and then my brain pump goes out.

Now 74 is downright chilly-need a blanket (whoops-only if you are a nudist).

54 minutes/24 hours…

Vikas said...

approximately 52 mins; its turned ON 24*60*60/(4*60+9) times a day; and for 24*60*60/(4*60+9)*9 seconds

remmij is correct.

Assuming 24 hr/day operation

9 hr/day for pepino pump operation.

47 minutes, 25 seconds

six and three quarter minutes a day

One more try...

47 minutes, 15 seconds

Larry G said...

cycles "on" 9 seconds every 4 minutes.
so 15 times in an hour (every 4 minutes) it cycles 9 seconds.

9x15 = 135 seconds per hour it is "on" cycling

135 x 24hrs = 3240 seconds it is "on" per 24 hours

3240 / 60 (seconds) = 54 minutes total time "on" ever 24hrs.

I see some got 47 minutes...

so where did I go wrong?

I come up with 54 minutes also.

"Assuming 24 hr/day operation

9 hr/day for pepino pump operation."

Oops, too many cervezas last night. missed a decimal point.

Convert everything to a common unit of measure.
Time on:
9 sec. / 60 sec/min = 0.15 min.

Time off:
4 min.

Determine the duty cycle, Ratio of time on/time off = 0.15 min./4 min. = 0.0375

Assuming 24 hr/day operation: 0.0375*24 hr/day = 0.9 hr/day or 0.9 hr/day*60 min/hr = 54 min. of pepino pump operation

Sounds like Pepino is "turned on" for 3 hours per day and actively "runs" for
6.75 minutes per day.

Oooops ... I think I may have jumped to the wrong conclusions the first time. After re-reading the available facts looks like Pepino may be "turned on" for 24 hours per day and actively "run" for 54 minutes per day.
I'm starting to get a headache.

3-6 pm would be 3 hours per day

I took John's question to ask how long Pepino is powered on to cycle on once every four minutes.

It cycles on 210/day (6300 x/ mo divided by 30)

(210 x/day) x (4 minutes) = 840 minutes each day that he has it powered up so that it can cycle on and off.

840 minutes divided by 60 = 14 hours.

It's only cycled on (as opposed to powered on so that it can cycle on) for 210 times a day @ 9 seconds or 1890 seconds, which is 31.5 minutes.

Please let the roosters wake him up soon, my brain is cycling dow...mhgfet/&#%£d.....

I think John is laughing for 9 seconds every 4 minutes. ;-)

@Sam Finn: Heh, I get that headache too and then I flatline.

Even if he doesn't rescue us from our misery & I never figure out how I keep going wrong on my calcs, I gotta say I'm quite impressed that he can do this all on solar and get to 74 degrees in the desert in July with an improvised homemade hybrid swamp cooler/AC system at very low cost.

@Sam, disn't see your last. I suspect you're right. ;-o.

41 minutes plus or minus. 4 minutes plus 9 seconds, not included 9 seconds.

Margery Billd said...

Turned on 24 hours a day, I suppose.

John has told us Pepino the swamp pump cycles 6300 times per month. This works out to 210 times per day. Further John has told us a cycle is 4 minutes. Therefore John runs the swamp pump for 840 minutes per day. Converted to hours, John runs pepino 14 hours each day.

leilani said...

Yap That's the way I read the question too, Barbara, but evidently nobody's yet gotten the answer.

[Either that, or Teach is sleeping in today .]

Pepino runs for 2.25 houir a day

some confusion ... tell me where I'm going wrong...

two things.. 1. the number of times the unit "cycles" - every 4 minutes

versus - 2. the AMOUNT OF TIME it is "on" during each 4 minute "cycle" - 9 seconds.

so It's "on" 9 seconds - each 4 minute cycle - so there are 15 cycles per hour (60 minutes)
and so 15 times it cycles "on" - at 9 seconds per cycle = 135 seconds "on" per hour.

so like this:

9 seconds on
wait 4 minutes
9 seconds on
wait 4 minutes
9 seconds on
.
.
.

so you add up how many 4 minute segments there are per hour... 15

and you calculate 9 seconds "on" .. for 15 times.. = 135 seconds

no?

assuming you're talking about a pump that works and not the fans = 0 hrs.

Margery Billd said...

very good barbara-the 6300 did not add up to me-brain twister-but I would run it all the time out there

I say Pepino is turned on about 14 hours a day. The pump running about 2 hours and 15 minutes of that time. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

rondeb said...

If you are saying how many hours is it on (available to cycle) it would be 24 hours. But I will stick with my A few seconds shy of 32 minutes a day (24 hours) based on a 30 day month for the time it is actually cycling on.

Now I have had many teachers that would fail you for not answering the question..."How many hours per day is Pepino turned on?" Not minutes, not seconds, etc. So the straightforward answer is 0.865 hour in a day Pepino is turned on. Hmmm...there still are variables to be considered....

Hartley said...

Come to think ofit, I guess Pepino is really turned on 24 hrs a day.

Rev.jimmyleebob said...

.865 does not an hour make..

Joel White said...

4 min. = 15 times per hr.
15 x 24 hr. = 360 times per day
360 x 30 days per month = 10800 times per month max.
stated 6300 times per month / 10800 max. times per month = .5833333333 time on
.58333333 time on x 24 hr per day = about 14 hrs per day.

best guess ;)

I am on the same page as you with a/c use. If your home is well insulated you can Spot Cool .. At times I have done an hour cool off around 9-10am.. then a 2-3 hour cool down at 2-5 pm and/or a short shot of cool before bed to last the night if needed. I supplement with small personal fans.. just a little airflow makes you less temp sensitive and the personal fans use next to nothing power wise. I use the little all metal fans mostly.. the 4 inch Optimus from Walmart- I bought quite a few when they were $5-6.. now they're up to $9ish We've got them any place in the house you'd sit for a while. My wife is a teacher and she has 3 in her classroom. I've recently gotten a Vornado Flippi V6.. love the adjustability and its ability to direct the air.. the Flippi's downside but to me livable..is it's voice. The pitch/tone of it seems a little forced. Many fans I've had have a pleasant hum that rocks you to sleep.. the Flippi not so much- I do like it though. I watched a YouTube of a guy with a Mini Split in his small RV..said it cost $349 which I though was a killer price- don't have the specifics on power usage and I don't know how much sand/dirt affect outdoor equipment there but thought I'd share.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHDT5ZEpKkw
