Does Ben have anything to say to the burros?
Ben looks at them when they are close by...and that is about it.

The burros look good.
Looks like to me the wild animals have a way of fattening up at THE FIELD LAB - and many look to be repeat visitors. This is probably the best oasis on the whole Terlingua Ranch- with lots of available water & food! Heck, some have been there so long they even have names. At our Mahan Hunt Camp we shot a few doves & quail to eat - then wait a year at long distances - then come back and harvest a few more. Nobody stays there long enough to get a name. A few ravens used to hang around - but they were pretty skittish - maybe because they hear those shotguns going off! Elf owls used to nest in our power line pole - in the numerous woodpecker holes. They didn't like humans - didn't want to be named - and one attacked me because I pointed a flashlight at him. They put on an entertaining show every evening for many visits - but that all ended when the power company replaced the pole. They were afraid it was about to fall - because of all the holes in it. The elf owls left after that - because they could not nest in that pole with no holes! Maybe if we caught some grasshoppers and fed them - we could have made friends with them.
How about a pole with some owl houses ?
The terrain where our Mahan Hunt Camp is located is pretty tough to dig holes for a pole installation - as after one inch of top soil - you hit solid rock layers. Might hang an owl house on one of the two existing power line poles. But bigger birds would probably take it over - if the new dwelling was not sized properly . Those elf owls are pretty much night hunters - only coming out of their nests in the evening just as the sun starts going down. Near their former nest site - we have an outdoor stone fireplace where we cook meat & birds - and it was enjoyable to set back and see them flying to and from their nests. But they certainly don't like lights shined on them! Must have thought I was some huge elf owl predator, and kept making passes at me until I put that flashlight down.
You appear conflicted. Was your choice to live in 'a far-away land away from everthing materialistic and everyone' not a conscious and deliberate one John? Then why not appreciate what you have and enjoy the beauty and simple presence what your present surrounds offer you.
Annemarie...Be careful of "appearances". Normally I wouldn't even respond to such a comment as I have always considered my blog to be a diary and not a dialog. But since I consider you to be a good friend, I thought I would try to give you some more insight. I learned soon after I started the blog that people will read all sorts of things into what I post (picking apart every nuance)...so I usually don't let it concern me. I try to just be concise and let the chips fall where they may. One of the pitfalls of having a public presence is that people often feel they know me well from reading my daily blog - when in fact they really don't know me at all. Everything they have gleaned from my daily doings only leads to assumptions about my true personality. While it is true I prefer to be away from the physical presence of people, I did not come here "to live in a far-away land away from everything materialistic". I love to be able to buy stuff and I love having new things to experiment with. Being cognizant of my YouTube channel growth does not mean I don't appreciate what I have and enjoy the beauty and simple presence that my present surrounds offer me. But FYI...sharing it all online is not entirely out of the kindness of my heart (and I don't personally follow any blogs). Ultimately, my online presence is geared toward becoming my retirement income. My YouTube channel is just part of the big picture.
From what I view of your Youtube channel, you have a great sense of humor; I giggle and laugh out loud often.
