On this day 10 years ago...

After spending 2 weeks in Alpine planning, McCoys dropped off my first load of building supplies on December 7, 2007.  I was camped on a spot 7 miles from my property where I began building the panels for my house.   Bottom photo is the virgin spot where TFL emerged.

Congratulations! 10 years seems like a blink anymore. I wished I would have done my own thing years ago. I had 13+ here but sold it due to deed restrictions, who wants land you have to ask permission before you do anything? I'm hoping to get a small piece there that I can move to. I am trying to save so I can, if it becomes available. There are a couple parcels there that I can afford, however they are away from the road waay to far, I'm in a wheelchair and would like to be within at least a half hour to 118. Watched enough of your videos to realize that is a wise limitation for me. Going to try to start building a small home on a trailer I can tow with my truck. Good thing is I do not need it to be tall, I'm in a chair lol. That will cut down on a LOT of weight. Enjoying learning from your blog and videos, THANKS!!

ps That trailer is different ;) Was it yours or did it belong to the folks where you were at?

The trailer wasn't mine...it belonged to the owner of the property I camped out on for a week.

Stay warm out there John. They're showing the weather out your way and it looks like you may have some snow.

Why did you skip the WX data today?

Congrats John, any regrets or things you would’ve done differently?

Snow, snow. It just snowed about 3 inches where I live near San Antonio. It was the 1st big event since l985 and was covered all evening on t.v. Most of the power is out in San Antonio now from heavy, wet snow. My big dogs loved the snow and ran and leaped through it. Everyone was out observing and making snowmen or swimming in their pool, or walking the dog and taking pictures.

Maybe 20 years ago - did a river trip on the Rio Grande in December. The theory was that we'd avoid the winter "up north" and have a relatively warm river trip.

Well.. it snowed... on the Rio GRande... and as some might know - there are some hot springs at a couple of places... I think .. Rio Grande Village.. where we did soak in those hot springs while the snow swirled around us! Of course getting dressed again was not as much fun!

So how long after that day did you have internet and then how long before the blog started.

Good question .. and perhaps another .. when you first moved there - did you know you'd have access to the internet... and if you had not.. would you still be there?

Clearly John is NOT a hermit!!!!

When I bought the property, I knew I could get phone but wasn't sure about DSL. I figured worse case scenario, I could get satellite internet. I finally got my land line on March 19, 2008. The blog began August 15, 2008.

The only thing I would have done differently? Build underground.

That is what the Uni-bombers brother from N.Y. did was to build underground on his first place.

Made my first visit to TFL in 2009. Seems like yesterday. It has been a real pleasure to follow your journey via your blog. My hat is off to you Sir, life well done.

Hello there John,

I thought I'd take some time to introduce myself- I have been following your blog for some time now. After years of consideration, I recently bought 20 acres in Terlingua and am destined to start setting up there this Spring 2018. You already have given me a wealth of knowledge through all your hard work on your homestead. I look forward to meeting you and to having some shared experiences with you in the near future. You'll see me around, I'm the woman with green hair, two dogs and a little blue parrot. Name's Lala, nice to meet you.

Have a Happy Holiday,

Lala
