I wonder how that happens?
1. It's in the middle of the road. 2. If you look at the way it is bent, the driver was turning in from the north off Hwy 118 and from that angle the sign is not very evident unless you know it is there - the red STOP faces away from the highway.
Good thing it doesn't snow much out there.
who a? an alternative approach
This has been a problem for a long time. The normal place to put a stop sign would be on the right side of the road - but there it is - square in the middle of the road leaving the ranch. But that does not work here - because cars frequently park next to the mailboxes - and traffic coming towards 118 - could not see the stop sign on the right side of the road
I would suggest that cars be required to park on the NORTH SIDE of the mail boxes and relocate the stop sign on the right side of the ranch road where it should be. Then traffic headed west on the ranch road could see the stop sign.
As is - there is no telling how much damage this does to the vehicles that hit the stop sign? Probably a lots more costs are involved with those car/truck repairs - compared to resetting a steel sign? Also there is the possibility of a driver losing control after hitting that sign in the middle of the road - and injuring people.
That's funny. Odd, I never noticed it. But I did not know it is 16 miles up there with 35 to 45 mph. So I was in a hurry and did 60? and the next day I noticed the sheriffs cars by the mailboxes. On the way out I was stopped in Alpine for doing about 38 in a 35mph zone but he let me go and I got back here as quick as I could by around 3a.m.
remmij ... I was thinking hologram but I like your idea better.
Margery - what you are telling us about speed limits - sounds "odd" to me. On most of 118 - I believe the speed limit is 65. Of course, a lot of the curves have speed limits of 35 - 45 - 55 -etc. Shame on you for speeding around curves.
That very long stretch of straight highway headed South - after Elephant Mountain - was the only highway I ever opened up my brand new 1999 Ford pickup truck with a huge 7.4 Diesel engine - to determine it's maximum speed ability. Fortunately there were no Sheriffs on that lonely stretch of highway. It ran so fast - it exceeded all my expectations - and there was no need - to ever do that again.
Paint a line on the road and the word STOP and call it a day
:-) Good idea Dan. Ronald, I was speeding on the rocky, empty, flying dust road with ruts leaving the Terlingua Ranch back to 118. Yes, the dust was flying in a big cloud. I have been learning over the years that even empty spaces have laws.
