the dreaded update

Did a Dell update and the pending Windows 10 update on my super laptop this morning and now it is all wonky - problems with internet access and programs locking up.  Uninstalled the updates but it's still temperamental.  Looks like I will be taking it to the computer doctor in Alpine next trip north unless find a fix on the internet or it magically goes back to normal.  Although this is the first time I have ended up with a problem, I always dread "updating" my computer when everything is already working fine as is.  84,88,71, .06",B

Hey John not sure if you've seen, but ever since your bucket vid made the world stage, now some are using the idea and getting significant press coverage:

Sorry this happened to you. My Dell computer has been prompting me to do the update for about a week now. Sure glad I didn't do it. Same as you, I hate updates. I just think that it's for Dell or Microsoft...not for the user.

Just went through that alone and then with Wi-Fi at Apple and still get a warning about updates and a glitch. (Maybe it is a little visitor in my computer).

Did the update on a DELL, Toshiba, and Samsung laptop and DELL desktop without problems.. but it DID take quite a well and several restarts... and they did fine... sorry yours did not.

For ordinary internet like browsing ... you can't beat a Chromebook with a solid state drive .. they are cheap simple...go 10 hours on battery .. virtually immune from viruses, etc. Things like video editing.. probably need something more.. but the Chromebook makes a great backup/standby unit. end of commercial... ;-)

I'm sure you've tried resetting to an earlier restore point by now. Hope it works. That saved me last year when Nvidia updated and wonked my pc. I literally RAN backward into the past to get away from that thing by restoring to a week or so earlier.

Hmm, as to a Chromebook, goodness, isn't that thing the physical embodiment of an active virus? Known as Google....

Just did a cumulative update for Windows 10 (KB4032188). Desktop (Acer) went about its update process, then shut off. Did NOT restart itself. Waited about 10 minutes, then I unplugged it for 10 seconds, then plugged it back in. It cranked up normally, finished with its updating, went to a sign-in page with a new picture, then loaded everything normally after sign-in. So far so good.
Probably best not to get stampeded into updating by nagging from the OS. If you wait a few days, any bugs will be found and corrected before you take it on. Unfortunately, Windows 10 tries to take that option away from you. It IS possible to go online and learn how to defang Win 10's automatic restart to install updates (no matter what you might be doing at the time), but it's not easy.
So many things about Win 10 just reek of Microsoft's arrogance- first they demand, over and over, that you take their free download. When someone DEMANDS that you take something for free, it just seems suspicious to me. Then you find that you're sharing all your data by default. Then an overly-cautious Windows Account Control won't allow you to install software to run a perfectly good laser printer on your desk, so you have to go online and find out how to de-tune this so you don't have to buy a new printer. Then Windows downloads all updates for you and restarts when it sees fit. Don't want or need the the complexity of the "Creator's Update"? You're getting it anyway. Want to use a different browser than Microsoft's offering? Fine, but you have to re-affirm that you want it to be your default browser every time you start it up, because Windows will never recognize that any browser other than its own is the default. Its free antivirus seems to do its job OK, but I suspect it over-reacts as well.
When one company like Microsoft is so dominant in its field, it's not necessarily working for you- more like you're working for it. They'll tell you what's good for you, and you'll like it.

We so agree. I still have 7 on both my computers, but my other half has 10 on both his. It's a newer ten and updates itself. He's having no problems like yours....which we had on an older computer to which we added Windows 10.

If I didn't enjoy my computer so much I'd unplug the worrisome rascal for good!

What Sam said . . . ditto for me. I do a lot of ordering on it as I live in a very rural area.

Updates with Linux are a manual operation so you can choose to do them when you want or not at all.
