background check

I reckon since the Christian stuff just kinda popped up here - I should give a little background for clarity.  First of all, it has been going on in my life for awhile now and suddenly I felt compelled to share this experience as I do with most of the rest of my life.  All my family have been church goers for generations.  Growing up,  I had the benefit of being exposed to a Christian life.  I attended Sunday school each week for 8 years, then "graduated" to regular church services for 4 more years.  Once I was in college, I stopped going to church.  I was all gung ho to jump into the world.  From age 19 up to 50, I lived without any personal  connection to Christ.
About 2 years before  I moved to the desert,   I was reunited with my Crazy Aunt Jean.  She was not crazy...but that is what we called each other (I was crazy nephew John).  We hadn't seen each other in over 30 years but all that time melted away and we were best friends again instantly.  I stayed with her several times at her home in Circle City, AZ.  She was loaded with faith.  Because of my great respect for her, some of that faith started to rub off on me.   BTW - Aunt Jean used to baby sit me and my brother when we were kids.  She was the one that told us that our mother had gone to Denver to get married to that guy that came around all the time ( I was 5 years old).  We spent the next day getting a "Welcome Dad" party ready.  My new step father became the greatest positive influence in my life.  He died 8 months before I moved here.  Crazy Aunt Jean died 2 years ago.

So I come out here to build my off grid empire...and  because of my Aunt Jean, I started giving a little prayer of thanks each day at sunset.  (I have a lot of free time with no distractions so I can really think about the crazy path my life has taken)   One day a couple of months ago, my friends Rebecca and Leddie come by for a tour of the greenhouse.  These two are about as genuine as you get.   We did the tour and I told Rebecca I've been meaning to come to Church services but something always comes up.  She said simply, "That's the devil talkin".  That comment kinda just bounced off of me that day...but soon after I began to think...what if shes right?
About a week later, I started thinking about what is really holding me back from going to Church again.  I really had been meaning to go.  Could that really be true? Does Satan really try to guide me away from Christ?   My first step is to accept Christ in faith and be aware that Satan will try to convince me otherwise.  I thought long and hard about the something else that stuck in my mind...But what if I become "one of them...a saved CHRISTIAN"?   From my own experience and thanks to the media, I have a very vivid notion about the stereotypical Saved Christian.   I thought about that aspect for awhile and decided of the choices I have today - that might not be so bad, and I can certainly become my own version of my perception.   I have jumped in feet first with the notion that there is a Satan that will try to persuade me otherwise and faith that the Bible is a true written history and our only chance for eternal salvation.  It really doesn't take that much effort (just faith) so why not give it a shot.  It is going well and I have great respect for Bonnie Cain as a real friend and for her message each Sunday.  Like everything else out here...this is a work in progress.
Matthew 13 : 9 Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand!"10 His disciples came and asked him, "Why do you always tell stories when you talk to the people?" 11 Then he explained to them, "You have been permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others have not. 12 To those who are open to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But to those who are not listening, even what they have will be taken away from them. 13 That is why I tell these stories, because people see what I do, but they don't really see. They hear what I say, but they don't really hear, and they don't understand. 14 This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah, which says: 'You will hear my words, but you will not understand; you will see what I do, but you will not perceive its meaning. 15 For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes -- so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.'

Crazy Aunt Jean

Now that I'm acclimated to big city life, traffic, and being around lots of people - it's almost time to turn around and head back to my desert life. I must say I'm a bit sad to go but sure I will be glad when I get home. Just finished packing the truck as I'm leaving early tomorrow morning and that has helped get me in the mood for the long trip. Spent the day visiting and driving - added another 130 miles to the odometer. Sure am glad the price of gas has gone down to around $2.35 here - can't imagine what will happen to a town like this that is so spread out if gas jumps over 5 bucks a gallon. I reckon folks will gripe and Exxon Mobil will report another record profit when that happens. Wonder how high gas would have to go to shut down this country. Decided it would be a good idea to get a picture of me and my Crazy Aunt Jean (it's a term of endearment that she reciprocates with by calling me Crazy Nephew John)....she's only 4'10 1/2" and is always the smallest one in photos so I gave her a stool to stand on.

The Colorado Whoopenhollars

Talked to my Crazy Aunt Jean yesterday. (a term of endearment - she calls me Crazy Nephew John) Seems the book she has written has just about completed the self publication process. Look for it from booksellers in the fall. CAJ is an absolute peach and turns out that she is a very good writer on top of all her other talents. She obviously picked up her knack for story telling from her father who was able to keep his children amused from afar while he travelled and worked for the CCC during the Depression.

Just enough sprinkles to give me the excuse to postpone the mortar work today. Managed to finish up repairs to turbine 4 (new tail and wiring) and got 'er flying again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0bLs8aY45Itube.com/watch?v=b0bLs8aY45I Also topped off all my batteries with a drink of distilled water. Shoveled up 2 wheel barrow loads of gifts from the longhorns around the perimeter then did some house cleaning. We still have moderate chances of rain over the next couple days so I gotta be on my toes.

NE Post

Got the NE post solidified.  My auger guy braved the elements and plowed out to visit today.  I prefer to let someone else hit the mud before I try it.  He's coming back tomorrow afternoon to drill the rest of my holes. Followed him out to go check the mail.  Found some goods from my friend Jim Snyder - I traded him some Benita Tshirts for some freshly canned goods from his farm in Michigan.   Just happened to run into UPS while at the highway.  Manny had my new halter for Ben.  He prefers the leather look (I won't tell him where that leather came from).

Just in case anyone is looking for something to do...my Crazy Cousin Mike (Crazy Aunt Jean's son) has created a survey related to the incidence of looting in relation to natural disasters. If you have a moment, please take this 10 question survey to help him with a project for his master's capstone project.  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HX3RTGX  73,84,56,0,C, .24

talcum powder road...

Worked on a soft/dusty puddle in my driveway today to try and firm it up.  Every time I drive through, it explodes into a cloud of dust and gets bigger every time I pass.  Poured about 50 gallons of my old creek water on it today to soak in and pack hopefully.  Not really talcum powder but seems to have many of the same characteristics:  It occurs as foliated to fibrous masses, its monoclinic crystals being so rare as to be almost unknown. It has a perfect basal cleavage, and the folia are non-elastic, although slightly flexible. It is the softest known mineral on the Mohs hardness; allowing it to be easily scratched by a fingernail. It is also sectile (can be cut with a knife). It has a specific gravity of 2.5–2.8, a clear or dusty luster, and is translucent to opaque. (from Wikipedia)

Inspired by the partial success of the waterboxx project - I'm prepping some palo verde seeds of my own for germination.  They are almost 2 years old - hope they are still viable.  I got these from a tree in my Crazy Aunt Jean's back yard in Circle City, AZ.  Jean and I shared the same birth date...she passed away last year so we no longer have a chance to call and wish each other happy birthday.  Some offspring from her tree would be a nice addition to TFL.  Her memoir from the great depression is still available through Amazon.com.  http://www.amazon.com/Colorado-Whoopenhollars-Living-Despite-Depression/dp/1441529896  87,96,64,0,W

One Less Cowboy

I received word last night that my Uncle Buff Rutherford passed away.  He is the "real cowboy" I dedicated my "West is the Best" poem to.  As a child (growing up watching television shows like Bonanza, The Big Valley, and the Wild, Wild West) my uncle seemed like a super hero to me.  As I got older, I grew to understand that he was just a regular man - but a man of great faith, a generous spirit, and a very hard worker who deeply loved his family and friends.  If I could aspire to be half the man he was, I'd be doing pretty good.

The local newspaper for the area where he lived most of his life just published a two part story about him last month - a fitting tribute to a man just before this death.

I was fortunate to have hand written a letter to him just in time for him to read it - about the recent passing of his sister, my Crazy Aunt Jean.  Her book about their young lives is still available.

Christmas day!

Well....chock up Christmas number 49! Have there really been that many?

Left my Christmas lights on all night last night. Nice to wake up early and see them blinking away outside. Got 5 great gifts today....$100 from my good ol' (94+ yr old) stepmother. We have a running joke about me always needing new socks. Guess its kind of like wearing clean underwear in case you get hit my a bus...in this case, having good socks in case you get bit my a rattlesnake?....or something like that. She is still concerned that my boots don't fit because I clomp when I walk in them....what a "mom" thing to say. A sweater and book from Chuck and Kathy....and a sweater and a book from my first girlfriend - really glad I tracked her down on Facebook six weeks ago or I would have been 2 presents short. She is still a sweetheart after 32 years of separation. Gotta get on the ball because no presents have gone out from here yet....

Baked another batch of solar cookies and donned the Santa disguise for one more important delivery. Just caught Ara and Spirit as they were getting ready to motor off for a days worth of travel and socializing. I will really miss them when they get the itch to hit the road again - but at least I know that they have a home base now on the Oasis - just a couple of miles away from the Field Lab.

Headed out to the nether regions of my 40 acres to try and mark the far SE corner of my property. Between GoogleEarth and my GPS, I'm getting close. Posted a flag to try and zero in on the spot. Found lots of new giant clam fossils out in that direction. Finished the day with calls to the "A" list relatives ( especially to my Crazy Aunt Jean ) - and a sunset bonfire for my Christmas finale....CHEERS!

Circle City

Had a good nights sleep away from home. Drove down the road to Discount Tire and ordered 4 new tires for the truck - they were kind of busy so I will go back tomorrow morning at 8AM to get 'em put on. Strolled around a Super Walmart and bought a couple pair of jeans and some shirts. $900 later I'm back in Circle City at my Crazy Aunt Jean's for lunch. Todays photo shows why they call it Circle city. Later in the afternoon I drove to Sun City to pick up my 93 year old step mother and we drove to her daughter Marty's for a pre blowout family only party. The blowout party is tomorrow - 80 people coming. That's more people than I see in a month back home.

on the radio

Made it on the radio finally today...my KRTS interview aired! Thankfully, I don't think I came off as an idiot. If you only linked up to the 630PM broadcast - you missed half the piece that was aired at 10AM. Plan on getting a wave file of the full interview that I can link from my website....I am heading up to Marfa tomorrow to drop off my newest solar oven bread creation baked today as a thank you. This one is 2 cups of self rising flour, 2 TBS of sugar, 2 TBS of McCormick's Grill Mates Mesquite Seasoning, 1 cup of small cubed Monterrey Jack Cheese. and 2/3 can of warm Keystone Light beer. Baked in the solar oven in a lightly oiled 48oz. tomato juice can - for 2 hours at 275 - 300 degrees. According to my Crazy Aunt Jean, cooking in a can was a depression era invention for baking bread. Gotta be careful when baking with cheese in such confined quarters as it tends to stick. Working on perfecting a recipe to create a little income for the Field Lab. Gotta put that solar oven to work.

Just got word that my Texas Country Reporter interview will be aired this weekend...thankfully, this press round is about to end. Check out their website to try and figure out when you can view it. http://www.texascountryreporter.com/show.htm I don't have a clue.

Worked on a planning and shopping list for the next stage of construction of the greenhouse building. Loading up tomorrow in Alpine after the trip to Marfa so I can get back to work.....plus, I have run out of snacks for my longhorn buddies.

field trip...

Field Lab Field Trip today to check out a new good neighbor's container project....building a house with six 45' shipping containers.  This guy is my new hero!  Really inspires me want to get my greenhouse finished.

Transplanted some of my pre-greenhouse plants today into bigger buckets with store bought dirt.  Got a best new Palo Verde sprout happening - 2 year old seeds from my Crazy Aunt Jean's house in Phoenix.  91,100,76,0,B
