This was a video I shot taking a first look around outside the house in upstate NY that I bought a couple of months later. I was interested in moving to the area because of the family history there on my maternal grandfather's (Harold F. Niles) side of the family. This Greek Revival style house was built by the brother of my GG grandfather in 1845. I lived here seven years before I sold it and moved to the desert. My property taxes there were $12,000 per year - I pay $400 per year here. I kinda miss grass and trees - but I sure don't miss the long winters, the summer humidity...and the expenses. I'd like to see a current Google street view image of the old place.

I moved in the second week of January. The line from the well had frozen and I didn't have running water until late March. Then I had to fix a cracked cast iron waste line in the basement and replace 10 ft. of pipe going out to the septic. Thus is began...

That house could hold 9 kids. So much space. Looks like a barn or garage big enough for your projects. $12K/yr taxes! That what we pay near central Austin for 50ft/ x 230ft lot with 1800 ft2 70 yr old mostly unrenovated house.

All of these good people of the past made their mark and left. As much as I would like sometimes, I cannot go back, so bitter-sweet. The past is gone. And how fast time passes as I get older. Friends are dying all around me here and often with no warning. Moments and actions count because sometimes I do not see the person again. For instance, someone asked me how I had dealt with all the deaths over the years in AA. Then I had a death nightmare and found out that on that night another friend had suddenly died from double pneumonia.

The person who told me emphasized several times that he had a giant heart attack. Well for gosh sakes, isn't that how everyone dies - the heart stops. My families homes and celebrations and lives were like the Norman Rockwell paintings. Many younger people do not know about the past. I tried to buy a home there and was denied. They thought I could do better and should not spend the money because of updates. Of course I wanted to. I almost cry sometimes for the people I loved and their way of life.

Though beautiful and with a long family history, I can not help but think that it was a big home for one person. Bet the upkeep and maintenance were pricey as well. Terlingua was calling out to you!
