John, I have been around a long time and I can't say I have seen footers done that way. Wish I would have known when I poured my footer for a greenhouse.
I have never seen this done before either. It is something I came up with when I was building my greenhouse and it seemed to work really well.
Had a lot of people come to look but no helpers. I take it it was the owners?
