semi...

Alpine run for supplies...30% chance of an isolated thunderstorm tomorrow afternoon and evening... Johnson Feed for "you know who", McCoys for downspout supplies, True Value for ammo and a holster, Thriftway for groceries, and a final stop to visit my friend Suzi at The Cheshire Cat ( Hyw 90 E. just across from Stripes).  Got home at 3:30 and cleaned out the new fridge and reloaded it with grub.

Swung over to visit the Mt. McKennites to see their new 40' shipping container that got dropped off yesterday.  Our new friend Kevin was on hand to start cutting out some parts for their new house.  Tim got a chance to do half the torching and I caught him adjusting his flame.  By the way...I purchased a new side arm today - Smith & Wesson M&P 40.  83,98,49,0,W

Well maybe you can do a little shooting here with us at the next party. (Outside of shooting with the web cam)

John,

That there's a real smooth hog leg you got, MP40.

Im keen on the Kimber 1911 .45. Next time Im down we can get with tffnguy with his commie gun (a real nice Mosin Nagant rifle) My 1911 and M1A rifle and with you MP40 hog leg and your .357 we can start a new annual 'Terlingua Beer Can Shoot" We can use tffnguys beer cans and if there's anything left, we can recycle them. (I wanna run one beer can out 800 yards for the M1A)

It's so strange you folk talking about and buying guns... who or what do you shoot?

I love the idea of the annual Beer Can Shoot Out. Maybe in the fall before the Chili cookoff.

I live in a very remote area and personal defense is an option I have taken responsibility for. As of May 16, 2010, Sherriff Ronny Dodson reported that he had 8 deputies to cover the county - an area that spans more than 6,000 square miles.

I wish I could send you about half the rain we have received here in Mississippi. Nice looking firearm. Have fun shooting...

The M&P is a great side arm, I carry the .45 and love it. My last duty weapon was a .40 Sig and I think the M&P is a little better weapon.

To The Flying Tortoise, there is evil out there, with thirty years in law enforcement I hate to say this, we can't protect you. Man power has been reduced too far.

John, I love your blog!

It was good to see you in alpine and got a close look at the ugliest shoes ( if you can call em that ) in Texas.

Having a firearm out there makes sense. And I am sure the good people of Terlingua would only shoot another human only if it was the very last resort.
Tin cans, on the other hand, better look out.

Hope you never have to use that weapon, but understand the necessity all by yourself.

Hope you never have to use that weapon but certainly understand why you have it way out yonder....

Nice piece, John. Amazing how polarizing firearms are. They seem to frighten rather than reassure, and I just don't get that. Just smile and remind folks you're the police until the police get there.

I'm not being judgemental. Yes I do understand and realise your need to protect yourselves and your property, but it's sad isn't it, surrounded as you are by all that remote and beautiful land.
But hey, I guess those beer cans are pretty bad and nasty and need shooting...

I always say, "guns don't kill people. People kill people"...
I've been shooting guns for around 30 years now...And I'm a GIRL! Yes, personal protection is a must...unfortunately. I have a S&W model 66 with a 4 inch barrel in 357 mag, a S&W model 36, 38 caliber with a 2 inch barrel, and just bought my husband a single action colt, sheriff's model in 38-40 caliber....

Would love to shoot beer cans with you guys some day....

M&P is a nice line of shooting irons and the .40 (aka 10mm short) is a nice all purpose round. You'll get years of good service out of that piece, especially as it's a polymer frame (less susceptible to sweat) and heavy steel mechanicals. Shoot and enjoy and here's hoping you'll get rain soon. I'll be out to TX next week to stay so expect a visit before long. Which reminds me; you got yourself a long gun, John?

I've been wondering the same thing the Flying Tortoise has been pondering: besides some recreational fun of shooting empty cans in the desert, what on earth are you shooting with .40 sidearms? Are there any hunting possibilities (that would explain the sidearm as a backup for that famous last shot when the rifle quite didn't do it)?
