I carry a Kimber 1911 .45 almost fulltime now. its a shame that I have carry a weapon. The Police in the town I live in South Texas focuses on being "reactive" to crime, and not "proactive" to prevent crime in the first place.
I feel as if I have been transported to "Bizzaro world" were everything backwards and fails to make any common sense.

carrying your own weapon is being proactive....relying on local law enforcement is foolish...especially out here where a 911 call can take over an hour for a response. I would much rather have them finally show up to find that I had to shoot someone instead of finding my dead body.

"Pistols are what you use to fight your way to your rifle or shotgun."

That being said. Any gun is better than no gun at all.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the police have no duty to protect the citizens.

Relying on law enforcement anywhere is foolish.

.40 caliber should kick the shit out of something, I just have 22's but my Ruger pistol will spit out 11 slugs as fast as I can pull the trigger.

And my trusty old Winchester that I doctored the trigger on will spit out 14 as fast as I can pull the trigger.

My half gun, the joke of a .25 pocket midnight special, I keep cuz it's okay in close, but I'm going to replace it with a Smith and Wesson small(aluminum)frame pocket 22 with a ten slug clip.

22 shells are cheap and the doctored slugs will really raise hell.

I made a solar water heater last year, but we don't get enough damn sun here for it to be very useful.

Time for a jigger of Brandy.

Okay, I'm stealing that statement.

I don't feel the need to carry here in Central Texas but then perhaps I should. Google Suzanna Hupp. She too lives in Central Texas.

You should have no more questions about the importance of this most important right.

TCM just about every jail log in our nation looks like a Mexican phone book.

The King Tuck is a great IWB holster! Good luck with that and as Breda often says, "Carry your gun, it is lighter than regret!". I carry for the same reason I have a multi-tool, locking folding knife, powerful flashlight, wristwatch, charged cell phone, cash, ID, etc; I am the master of my own fate, responsible for my own daily care and feeding. The only 99% occupation I have is a filled holster, locked and loaded, with back-up mag.

That said that reminds me, John. Do you carry a back-up magazine? Mags are a weak point for failure with semi-autos, a spare mag is light and a quick fix to a failure. Always nice to have more rounds, too.

Hey Al...I worked in law enforcement in Central Texas. My advice: carry the gun.

I know 2 people personally who were shot in daylight in a Target parking lot...and many many more who I don't know personally who've been assaulted at every hour of the day and night...all in central TX.

My new Ruger came with two magazines, I've never had a magazine fail on me but maybe that's just because I don't do much shooting, I like to save my bullets in case of dire need, I only have 2000 rounds and don't want to waste them.

Of course, with any luck I'll die with 2000 rounds.

BBC said...

Or maybe I'll die shooting back.

John,

Have you been having problems on the ranch? I just closed on my property down there and will be coming down after this well. Maybe we can meet and you can give me the lay of the land.

How sad to read these comments. Kind of sounds like the 19th century, except for the internet and pick up trucks. Pity you, poor souls in Texas if you feel you have to wear a gun while working around the house.
Oh, I know, you'll argue it's your right and you are proud of it. Good on you. Not me.
Used to visit this blog for creative stuff and it was nice while it lasted. Thanks for that, Mr.Wells. All the best to you in your future endeavours. And if you ever wonder, yes, there are still many places in this world where guns are not a necessity . Like up here, north of 49th parallel.
I'll take my dog for a walk now. And no pistol in my pants.

Like up here, north of 49th parallel.

That could change, I'm just a tad south of it and I often pack a gun.

That lady forest ranger that was shot here a few years ago didn't use her's soon enough, or never saw the man's intent until it was too late.

BBC said...

The reasons a person may need a gun are many but I've never shot a rattle snake, I just beat the shit out of them with a tire iron.

I can understand that when you live semi off grid out in the middle of the desert that it takes the law a while to get there, however if they add more patrols then people would just be bitching about the added tax to cover that. I don't believe that any of you can be satisfied no matter what they do. You do not want them anywhere near you, either on the roads or anywhere else, yet when you need them then you want them to be setting right at your driveway waiting for the call

I don't know about anyone else...but I'm not proud to own a gun. Nor would I be proud to have to use it. But I would be happy to have it should circumstance dictate the need. I find it depressing that human beings find the need to create weapons for killing other people. But it's the biggest industry going...not sure what's second...porn or oil.
When people didn't have guns they still killed each other. The problem isn't guns...it's human mentality.

Nice gifts from your visitors, John. I've been intrigued by the Jack Daniels Honey for a while, but, haven't bought any yet. Let us know how it tastes.

I didn't know you were going to screen in that covered area. That should make it nice, but, I hope all the critters that hang around you're place don't damage the screen. I'm thinking especially of Benita's horns. I know that they are aware of how big a space they need to maneuver their horns, but mistakes happen. Mr. Floppy also likes to use anything handy to scratch himself with. Knowing you, there is already a plan in place to deal with it.

Nice looking holster. Can't figure how it attaches. Does it clip to your belt?

Thanks for the grand tour John. Sure impressed with all the work you have done and have planned to do.
Allen, The Jack Tennessee Honey is GOOD. Definitely honey but still JD charcoal filtered sour mash. :)
Update on my girlfriends name, it is Sandy. Probably only told John her name once.
Sandy, Wally Dog, and I enjoyed meeting you.

"mexican phone book." even if that's true, that may be the result of police profiling or other bad behavior; not necessarily reflective that the mexicans in your county are the only thugs around. i'm not the PC police but it was a bit shocking to see that particular prejudice in black and white. not trying to start a comment war; just food for thought -hw

The police are law-enforcement officers. They are there to enforce the 'law'. Who does the law protect: in theory, everyone, in reality, those who afford to bribe the politicians to write the laws to favor those people who can afford to bribe the politicians. Hence the selective enforcement of the law by the system where the poor go to jail and the rich go to rehab or probation if and when they are caught breaking the law. I live in the Austin area and always have a rifle and pistol in my vehicle. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Hey JW,
I have couple of nice .45 semi-autos for concealed carry and home defense. I've shot them a lot but what I really enjoy shooting is black powder civil war era revolvers, nothing like them 8in barrels for accuracy out to 75 even 100 yds. If I was open carrying on my place like you I would strap one on. Huge fun to shoot, inexpensive and not even considered a firearm by the law.

I recently got one of these 1858 Remington New Model Army .44s from Cabelas and it is a fine shooter and excellent workmanship for only $179. The Colt 1860 Army is outstanding as well.
