5 years and no degree
In the fall of 1977, I went off the the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Calculus was the first class I failed in college and thankfully I have never had a use for it. After 5 years in college and three different majors, ( I flunked out twice but made dean's list once) I headed to NYC to seek fame and fortune in the fashion world. The second building from the right is where I spent my folly in the university system - Hinshaw dorm. Fast forward to today - 35 years later...my five year anniversary in the SW Texas desert. I learned a lot more about myself and the world these past five years than I did in college. I think that is what they call "continuing education". Celebrated by ordering a new camera. Been keeping an eye out for a Canon T3i bundle deal. Found one at Amazon and bit the bullet. Here's to enhanced imaging for year 6! 55,79,42,0,B,1

Congratulations John. You haven't had to share your experiences with us, but you have been gracious to do so, even through those negative comments. On my visit to the Big Bend area you went out of your way after a really big rain storm to make sure I got a visit to TFL. The complex you have built is no small feat for anyone in any area, let alone the West Texas desert. I've personally loved looking at the beautiful West Texas skies, be it the storms or those majestic blue sky days; those sweet creatures you have befriended and named...we all feel in love with Benita, Beatrice, the herd and now Ben, and don't leave out Mr. Floppy (what a character), Carl the Rooster Who Must Be Obeyed, the West Texas Chicks and the Rabbit Colony. All are a reason to stop by each day or evening. And now BenLand. Continued success and joy. I hope your next venture into cheesemaking comes out a little better...that was fun to watch.
Congrats, I'd say you are about settled in. ;-)
Congratulations. You sure have learned a lot on your own and have shared your life with us. Thanks!!!
Funny timing, John. We just bought the T3I bundle at SAMs club last week for our trip down here this weekend. Been grading and setting a cabin and shooting with it the entire time.

5 years and no degree?
You've spent 5 years blogging and get the 3rd degree here constantly.
Somebody ought to give you a diploma for that.
Reckon you can be right proud of what you have accomplished in the past 5 years :)
Congrats
congrats...
so what do you want to do when you grow up?
that's my answer when people ask me about my life...
that's I'm still trying to figure out what I'd like to do.. but I keep busy in the meantime!
again.. congrats and yes.. thank you for sharing your life with us even when it includes politics and religion!!!.
Small world. Been following your blog since about day 1 and now find out we lived in G'boro at the same time. Was there from '81 to '84 living in Kirkwood. Bill
Great accomplishment. Hope you get back to the greenhouse soon. What kind of temperatures does it hold this time of year?
Time does fly at the School of Hard Knocks but the lessons learned are valuable ones. Like you, I missed out on earning a degree but I seem to have become an expert on life's trials through no choice of my own. And I'm glad to know I didn't miss anything in that calculus class either. You are one of the most interesting people I've met and an inspiration to us all. I look forward to seeing you again at TFL later this month.
To paraphrase Von Clauswitz, 'no plan survives first contact with reality'. A college education is a fine thing but you'll learn more in a month on the job than 4 years of college. Congrats on sur-thriving for 5 years.
Yep, congratulations on five great years at The Field Lab. You've accomplished so much. And, thanks for sharing so much of your interesting life with us.
I spent a large chunk of my youth in Greensboro, NC, from age four to about age ten. I have very fond memories of the place.
I bought a Canon T3i about one year ago, and what a fine camera it is. I didn't get the bundle, because I already had an excellent Canon L Series lens, the 16 - 35mm. We just bought Ok Hwa the same camera body, also, and she uses the Tamron 18 - 270mm lens on it. It's a great, versatile camera, and I know you'll like it.
Congrats on your first 5 years and living in the moment. Lots of great experiences to enjoy and/or learn from.
