isn't there a certain irony to the idea of living off the grid - via the fruits of modern industrialized civilization?
and solar is certainly changing the world in ways many may not fully appreciate.
Friends visited Africa recently - and way out in the middle of nowhere - local people are flocking to the village store which has solar panels - to charge their cell phones!

John was one of the first off gridders who embraced technology via his daily blog, facilitated by a government rule that phone companies provide lines regardless of their cost. Through those twisted pairs, Internet DSL provided a bi-directional window.
I grew up with two brothers in Waterbury, CT. Mark & Johnny Wells ! Lost touch around time I went into the service .
