Testing out a sculpture in my apartment on Elizabeth Street back in 1990. The stack elevated up and out of a 4 ft. tower. The 4 monitors played recordings of Gulf War coverage from the 3 major networks and CNN (in the days before the internet). I entered my "Gulf War TV" in a juried exhibition and won a solo show at a gallery in NYC. The Viridian Gallery was one of those NYC "vanity galleries" - meaning you had to pay to be a member of the gallery in order to get your work shown once a year in a group show. The gallery was in a very bad location - way up in a high rise on 57th Street. Since I had won my solo show, I didn't have to pay them any money (although I did have to pay $35 to enter the initial competition). I really didn't like the gallery or the director. The solo time slot was during the Christmas/New years holidays - not exactly peak time for a show. They wanted me to do my solo show with a bunch of my cute little TV's but instead I filled the gallery with 100 broken televisions piled up on pallets and wrapped in plastic with a recording of the sound of static coming from inside the pile. Funny thing is - there was a building workers strike at the end of my show and the freight elevators were out of service for about a week afterwords. I almost didn't get my pile of TVs out of there in time for their next show. The gallery director was not happy with me at all. Needless to say - I did not become a member. I still have that Gulf War TV sculpture packed away in one of my shipping containers. My solo show pile went straight into a dumpster.
