airports

Three weeks and counting till my first flight.  Been checking the surrounding area for alternative training sites in case TFL gets swamped in.  Lajitas airport may allow it if I provide a certificate of liability insurance (which I don't have).  Alpine's airport will not allow it unless I get permission from the city council.  Took a drive to Marfa today to check out their airport - and I couldn't even find anyone to talk to about it.  Been so long since I have had to deal with any kind of bureaucracy - I forgot what a pain it can be.  65,80,59,0,W

Look on the bright side, you couldn't find anyone to say "no". So, by default, you got the go ahead.

Hey John,

The Terlingua Ranch has numerous (mostly non-maintained) landing strips - scattered all over the place! Might be good to know their locations - if you need to make an emergency landing.
Closest to your place is one just left of the main paved road going towards the ranch (close to Marion Suber's Hill). Of course, the ranch has their best (and only maintained) landing strip close to the ranch headquarters.
Another strip is located much further north - just before you get to Cedar Springs Lake. This is about a mile past the Cedar Springs Ranch. And there are more - but I forget where they are located. Guess a review of the Goggle maps would help indicate where they are located - along any proposed flight plan. Doubt that any would be as cactus free as your home strip - but all would be better than landing in normal brush!

Cheers,

Ronald Mahan

Maybe I don't see the big picture but wouldn't a cleared area about the size of a football field do just fine for training purposes?

Your instructor should have a certificate of liability insurance.
