low heat tolerance

I seem to have found a need to add AC.  Pepino just can't quite keep up with my comfort zone while I am convalescing.  I am spending a lot more time indoors these days and the addition of all that body heat pushes my finely tuned ecosystem beyond acceptable limits.  The unit is 5000 Btu's (600 watts while cooling) and will run off my existing solar a few sunny hours midday without taking a toll on the system - just burning off excess juice that is going unused. 84,91,67,0,C

The new small air conditioners are cool.

Alrighty. You definitely deserve to be comfortable while convalescing.

That is a great idea. Keep cool, my friend.

Glad to see you are embracing refrigeration. I would suggest that you consider returning the portable unit and get a less expensive but technically better window unit. The problem with that portable is that a system with only an exhaust air will depressurize the room causing hot outside air to enter. A window unit uses outside air in the condenser section in a closed system while the evaporator section inside recirculates indoor air making the window unit much more efficient. Some higher cost portable units have two hoses to service the condenser, one for intake and the second for exhaust.

Finally. I have one that is similar in my storage area that I have never used. I should get it out for emergencies. But I have been using a small window one for emergencies. Fans just don't get it except to direct cold air.

@rj: Would a mini spli unit work well there?

rj said...

A minisplit would be excellent but way more expensive. Some of the high end minisplits have two or three times the efficiency of conventional window and central system for their size and conceivably could be configured to run directly on DC power.

Thanks.I wonder what makes them so expensive, and if they'll ever come down in price?

It's kind of like a 2015 Lexus Hybrid versus a 1990 Hyundai 4 cylinder. The best mini-splits have variable speed compressors and fan motors along with electronically controller expansion valves. The low price AC don't have expansion valve and their coils corrode in a few years. The best units don't leak freon and they don't waste electricity. But the "Lexus" AC will never be the price of a "Hyundai" competitor.

I have an old 5000Btu window unit but my windows are too small and I'm not in the mood to chop a hole in my hut. I am running the portable in conjunction with Pepino so the air being pulled in has already been cooled a bit.

I had no idea that John had enough battery juice to run AC! wow!

yes, I later thought about your window size, so you did well.

Been looking into the same thing for a 4x4 sprinter build I'll start soon. There is a guy on youtube running a mini split on a trailer. Seems to work well.Has the condenser sitting on the tongue where the gas bottles usually go.First became aware of them in Costa Rica. They use them everywhere there. Most of the time just in the bedroom for sleeping as most homes there have no insulation.

Even if you have to run it off your generator for a few hours a day and during the evening, it would be worth it. The heat down there right now is getting brutal.

If you were to stretch a tarp a little above your roof for an additional layer of shade would it make much difference in your indoor temp?

Sam Finn...no

Well, how did the AC work?

Margery Billd said...

Brutal heat here in TX. People, animals die from the heat all the time.

Well, on diverse topics, I am still trying to figure out who is in the light and who is in the dark and who determines that. Probably the rightious and sanctimonious and better-than-though and haughty untouchable church goers think they determine that from their high perch.

I replaced the central heat and air heat pump in our 1400 sq ft. house with a Mitsubishi Mr. Slim mini split. They wanted $6,000 for a new conventional unit. The Mr Slim was $3,200. It cools and heats for much less than the old system. Some mini splits are made to run off solar and come in all sizes. You should be able to cool your cabin for less than $1000. Look for one with variable speed compressor.

John, you can always use the unit as well in your completed container project. Have you had a chance to do any design work on the container project?

It’s good that you finally decided to get an AC unit, especially during these hot times. And since you’re still convalescing, anything that can help make you comfortable would be a great thing. And since you’re probably going to use it on sunny days, it wouldn’t impose too much on your solar. Anyways, have fun with that! Good day!
