Enjoyed the flight. Anybody live on Panther Mountain?

John Wells said...

No. The owners have a camp at the base where they stay when they come out to hunt a few times a year.

What would a Panther Mountain cost a guy?

John Wells said...

I seem to remember the owners telling me they bought the property about 25 years ago - 450 acres for $50/acre.

…can anybody really own Panther Mountain — or any real mountain? I tried to buy a wave once, but lost track of it after the check cleared…
looked kinda like this one…

Actually yes. There is no magic to owning a mountain vs any other kind of property - it is just a bumpy piece of flat land. The owner's name is on the deed and they have clear title to the property and they pay the taxes on it. That gives them the sole right to do with it as they please (at least out here), including restriction access to anyone else and being the only ones allowed to legally sell the property.

They got a good buy.

"Property Rights: The Key to Economic Development. ... The importance of having well-defined and strongly protected property rights is now widely recognized among economists and policymakers. A private property system gives individuals the exclusive right to use their resources as they see fit." &
"Historical economic development can only be explained by private property, the rule of law, and other key institutions. Classical economists understood this, but didn’t emphasize what they took to be obvious."

Property Rights: The Key to Economic Development

true enough Mr. Wells — I was just thinking Panther Mountain was metaphorically similar to Mount Nebo… and such places become more than property at times – clearly outside the legal structures, while
not necessarily superseding them.

wonder who owns Mt. Terror
or Diamond Head or “Fisherman’s Peak” (Mount Whitney)
…maybe Bezos will purchase Everest and seal it off…? or ship it elsewhere ;-)
