Who loves the moon...

Bitter cold and cloudy all day. 34,39,33,0 I thought this was the desert. Just the kind of day to stay inside and think about life and all the new friends I've met out here. Some of them have turned out to be extraordinary friends.

Made yet another trip down south to fill up a propane cylinder. Had lunch with my buddy Dan who I haven't hung out with in ages. We got caught up to date - looking forward to my second annual visit to his place as Santa. Funny how quickly you can build a history with people out here.

Came back home to hunker in for what will probably be the coldest night of the year. Always looking for something to do....I installed the software for the webcam that mounts on my telescope. Now I gotta read the manual through and through to figure it all out. Been out here almost 2 years and haven't even peeked through it yet. Hope to get some good moon shots for a new BFF - when the blue moon comes around at the end of the month.

Thought that was you at the Study Butte Store John. I was pretty busy hunting for groceries and got in to a conversation with Keith Chapman about the falcon and then about renting a storage which is about $59 a month cheaper here than in Odessa. Next thing I knew you were gone. I still want to make it out there, but sure would like to get some good weather again. Looks like I'm about to shift gears to some different land so maybe I can actually get in to getting something going.

Glad you mentioned the propane cylinder, I think it was you that showed all the fittings and such for hooking up big buddy to a larger tank a while back. Do you happen to recall when that was, I've been searching but can't seem to find it.
Strange thing about Texas weather, here I am in Athens and I'm north of the snow, go figure.

I scurried out of my warm bed in Austin this morning before sunrise and was enchanted to see moonlight streaming in the western facing kitchen window at the same time the first rays of sun were oranging the eastern horizon. It was magical here in the big city, so I can only imagine how lovely it was on the desert. If it snows on you tomorrow (and it supposed to snow here in Austin so hopefully you'll get to enjoy some frozen precip of your own) please take some of your wonderful photos so we can enjoy vicariously the exquisite beauty of snow and desert intertwined.

Boy howdy John, sure glad I ain't down there camped out at your place freez'n to death. I keep an eye on the temps down there...just about the same as it is in windy Deming ....where I ain't. The slabs is beautiful this time of the year.

Bob...they sell the 12 ' hose at Amazon with a quick connect on the heater end and a regulator on the other.

Ok Hwa and I are looking over your post for today and yesterday. She became very concerned when I told her Benita had been gone for awhile. She still finds that big 'ol cow a bit intimidating.
Every night now, she wants to check to see the new visitors on your front porch.
It was very cold here in Dallas yesterday and today, also.
We can't wait to see some shots made through that telescope.
Best regards, and try to stay warm.

Friends and I are planning a big blue moon party up here in Colorado too. Glad to see our frigid snowy weather made it down to Texas.

Bob from Athens:
Here's an excerpt from the Big Buddy user manual
NOTE: THIS HEATER MAY BE OPERATED WITH (1)
OR (2) DISPOSABLE 1 LB. PROPANE CYLINDERS OR
WITH A REMOTE REFILLABLE CYLINDER(S) MAX. 20
LBS USING (1) OR (2) F273701, F273702 OR F272702
HOSE ASSEMBLIES WITH FUEL FILTERS (F273699) ON
EACH HOSE ASSEMBLY. IT MAY ALSO BE OPERATED
WITH (1) F271802 HOSE ASSEMBLY CONNECTED TO
A REGULATED (11” W.C.) PROPANE SOURCE OR (1)
F271803 HOSE ASSEMBLY WITH 11” REGULATOR
WITH ACME NUT.

The hose and fittings you need depend on what propane tank you want to connect to the heater. You can use a 20 lb tank directly, or a much larger tank or tee off the line that feeds stove/fridge in an RV. Lots of details on that at the Mr. Heater website section on hoses, fittings and accessories. If you look at the items numbers from the user manual you'll see pictures of exactly what's needed.

Hi John;
Hope you stay warm tonight. Hope Benita is OK too. Here on the east coast in Georgia it is going to get down to freezing Sunday Morning, brrrrrrrrrr!

For every one using propane please have plenty of ventilation or you can die form the fumes. All be careful, good night.

It'll be great to see some astrophotography.

I have a scope, but it's an 8" Dobsonian. No tracking. But the beauty is, I can have it set up and watching the night sky in seconds.
