Pandemic Saturday

Roughly a year after the first reported case of Covid-19 was reported in the US, we finally have a real President who is taking definitive action for the American people.

Sounds great and I truly hope it works. Not sure how we'll pay for it with all the arbitrary lockdowns killing small businesses which are the backbone of our tax system. But I do hope a different viewpoint does something positive.

The point here is...Biden is taking action on a problem that trump basically ignored. The costs of finally seriously addressing the pandemic can directly be blamed on trumps inaction.

@CBC How do we pay for it? After a trillion+ tax cut for the very wealthy and corporations, I didn't hear many people saying how will we pay for those. If you don't get this virus under control, those small businesses will be gone for good. Basic economics and common sense would suggest that spending money now to deal with the problem and get people vaccinated will be a whole lot cheaper in the long run than trying to figure out what to do when unemployment hits 40%. A good case in point would be President Obama's effort to save the US auto industry, despite all the GOP voices who were opposed. He ended up saving tens of thousands of jobs and the industry, and was paid back in full with interest.

If you have a roof leak, do you refuse to spend the money to patch the hole because it would cut into your beer budget, or do you wait until your ceiling collapses to address the situation? This isn't hard to figure out, really.

Of course we'll have to spend money now to get covid MAYBE under control. My point is where are we going to get that money? Yes we could tax corporations at the high levels they were at and watch whats left of "american" corporations pull up stakes and go to more tax friendly countries taking their jobs with them like they have been for decades. Or we could just borrow more from China and further shackle our grandchildren with crushing debt. Corporations don't pay higher taxes they just pass it on to consumers, thats basic business. We need our country open and functioning properly. More and more studies are coming out that show the lockdowns havent done a damn thing but cause what will probably be far,far more deaths than covid. Isolate and safeguard the elderly and compromised people and let the American economic engine run and then we'll have a shot at ending this. But if borrowing or printing money is our solution were all in for a long hard road that ends up being a dead end.

And if we are going to borrow the money can we at least spend every single penny in this country....for once.
