Pandemic Saturday

COVID GROUND ZERO
Several members of this church on Terlingua Ranch have become ill in the past month.  The self proclaimed pastor as well some of the congregation are Trump supporting Covid deniers - anti mask and anti vaccination.  A relatively new resident out here who was a member of the church, died of Covid related complications 2 nights ago.  At least one other person is hospitalized.  It is difficult to get exact numbers or do any contact tracing as these folks are all being tight lipped about the situation.  It is believed that the deceased was infected by out of town guests.  The ring leader (pastor) is Hat Bailey...long thought of as a harmless eccentric due to his soft spoken nature and belief in bizarre conspiracy theories about government, etc.  Seems he no longer "harmless" as he is sinking deeper and deeper into his own little fantasy world of conspiracies and misinformation and his distorted views on the pandemic have made him a danger to himself, his congregation, and the entire community.

I'm not going to go political here. Which will be an effort. But I live in a central Texas county which has a 35% vaccination rate...it's gone up a notch or two in the last few weeks, but that's pretty low. Health department is doing all it can to make the vaccine available. Anytime, all day, drop in. Population is 30,000. ICU here has been full, as has been the case in a neighboring county which has more hospitals. 4 per week have been dying in the last few weeks in this county.
OK. I will go political. The county is 90% voting for Trump last time. The rates of deaths/infection/vaccination in Vermont in a county of my size tells a different story.

No,as Shadow Warrior said, COVID doesn't care and medical care-givers don't care who you voted for. COVID goes for the old. Or has. Our ER has been seeing a lot of kids lately.

Some of the most vaccine hesitant are blacks and Latinos. Not really known to be Trump voters. Personally I'm a big proponent of freedom and personal choices but I also believe just because you have the freedom to do something doesn't mean you should.

i often hear "I wish I had gotten the vaccine when I was in the hospital." Or upon the loss of a loved one - "I wish he/she had gotten the vaccine." it's wonderful that one can choose to not vaccinate and still receive first class care if they get it. if i were in the medical field, i would probably quit.

there is one person i know who had some serious side effects from the vaccine. she was unable to walk for a few days after the second injection. she is ok now, but it was scary.

as for me, glad i got the vaccine and tired of hearing the politics of it.
