Saturday Work/Play

Five hours this morning getting my east vent in place.  Playtime this afternoon with the fresnel.  A couple of more bead experiments and was able to get video of the quick melting process using two polarizing lenses in front of the G9. This is what 2000 degrees does to black sand.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pnq0VDDm9qo

OK, gotta know, what's the Physics that makes that melting sand form a ball and not just a blob?

Very Nice

I want one. I carve walking sticks and I think I could incorporate one into a stick. It would be something different.

Ben, it's the competition between the forces of adhesion and cohesion. In this case, there is apparently a stronger cohesive force pulling the molten stuff together than the force of adhesion that would cause the molten stuff to stick to the un-melted sand. We put wax on cars to give the car a low adhesion to water so that it will bead up and roll off. same principle.

How do you get a hole in a bead?

I think you have a new product ... Terlingua Pearls.

Yup, definitely an item for The Field Lab Mercantile. Such a beautiful little sphere. Also interesting is the reflection in it's shiny surface.

Nice progress on the greenhouse. It looks so nice now. Can't wait to see it in person.

P.S., Loved the video...

Are the beads magnetic? Most black sand contains Hemitite and magnitite.
