Took a test today...

Before anyone asks why did I get tested if I don't have any symptoms: If you already sick, it's too late. The test was free and I took advantage of the opportunity. In the remote chance that I am infected but asymptomatic (we have a lot of dumb ass tourists flowing through the area now), I could unknowingly spread the virus. That is exactly why we have a crisis in the world right now. If you get a chance to get tested - take it!

I'm throwing this out there in the event that someone might find it useful. It's a portion of an email I sent to my niece the day after. If you can defeat a viral respiratory infection while it's just getting started, you might just dodge a bullet. That the tools are cheap and readily available is good too.

"A slightly odd thing happened to me last night. I got a delivery yesterday, a large shipment of bagels. Perishable, in theory- it takes a very long time for a bagel to be unusable. I didn't observe the usual 3 day quarantine of packages as I wanted to get them into the freezer. I sliced one open and toasted it. It was delicious. One of these whole wheat bagels, toasted, with peanut butter on top, makes a pretty good breakfast; the amino acids of the two combining to make a complete protein.
Later that night, after I had watched Colbert, my nose suddenly started to run. I popped a 500 milligram timed-release vitamin C tablet. The runny nose didn't stop. So I did a 1000 IU vitamin D3 capsule, and the runny nose dried up. A little later, I recognized that twinge in the back of my throat that inevitably precedes a sore throat, so I took another vitamin C tablet- it's very difficult to OD on vitamin C. The feeling slowly went away. About an hour later, the feeling was back. I took another vitamin C tablet. That feeling slowly went away, and my throat felt OK again. About an hour later, it was back. On full alert now, as I don't often see what I would call repeated attempts at infection, I took another 500 milligram Vitamin C tablet and another 1000 IU capsule of vitamin D3 and donned a new 3M NIOSH P100 mold remediation respirator that I just happened to have in my inventory. The feeling slowly ebbed. About an hour later there was "something", it felt like a sort of half-assed attempt at infection in the back of my throat, and I took another vitamin C tablet. The feeling went away again and didn't return. I stayed awake to await further events. I didn't feel sleepy at all. About 6 AM I decided it was done for the night and had a short glass of one of those wines that I told you about, and two tokes of herb- hey, it's legal here, so shoot me. Then I got some sleep.
What I conclude from this little episode is that vitamin C and vitamin D3 are effective against a budding respiratory infection. Maybe even the coronavirus, if that's what it was. The vitamins give your immune system the materials; the resources to mount an effective defense and buy time. Time may be critical to allow your immune system to manufacture the novel antibodies necessary. I think my recommendation still stands- to keep supplies of these two vitamins close at hand at all times. Very difficult to OD on vitamin C, although you don't want to overdo the D3. You need to run over to that little fire in the forest full of fuel and stamp it out, with vitamin C. The timed-release feature helps to spread out the effect over a longer period. Stopping a respiratory infection before it gains a firm foothold is key, because once it's established, all bets are off."

Now in Austin you must show symptoms to get tested for free because of the limited number of tests.
It is required to wear a mask if you are in public or go into any business.
The epidemic is spiking big time.

WhyR… Your comment reads just like one of those chain emails or Facebook messages that end up circulating for years. What you have presented is called "anecdotal evidence" which holds very little weight when it comes to reality. While it’s true that some vitamins can have a marginal effect on warding off a cold, there’s absolutely no clinical evidence that it can stop or treat the new coronavirus. Taking the recommended dosage of vitamins is fine but don't take more than the recommended amount per day. Extra vitamin C will not be absorbed and simply pissed away. And you are correct - too much vitamin D can be toxic. Unfortunately, there is a lot of bogus information floating around the internet these days about "boosting the immune system" to ward off Covid-19.

Thought of you today when I watched on MSNBC which frequently covers what happens in Alpine, Texas by all accounts a very small West Texas town. I should know as I went to college there but had to transfer to another university to keep my eighteen-year-old sanity at the time.

They reported that the line was very long for the free tests and it took some folks up to four hours in line to be tested. How long did you have to wait?

John Wells said...

There was a huge turnout for that testing day in Alpine. Only 113 people got tested in Terlingua. I only had to wait about 10 minutes.
