Rather fitting that Trump's last Christmas card photo was taken beneath a portrait of Harry Truman.  Truman's presidency was one of the most unpopular in history, with approval ratings lower than Nixon after Watergate.  His presidency was also plagued by corruption concerns such as favoritism in judicial appointments.  Despite this, Truman was allowed to preside over America's transition from reluctant WW2 participant to world policeman.  The America hated around the world today was formed on Truman's watch.  

The number of people who died during Truman's presidency pales in comparison to the number who died over 40 years of foreign intervention and interference as a result of his policies. However, the number in both cases was far too high and preventable.

For dropping atomic bombs that killed hundreds of thousands of Japanese non-combatants; for creating the CIA with a mandate to destroy undesirable democracy around the world via assassination and coups; for instigating the Cold War; for involvement in the Korean War; and for playing a major role in the establishment of Israel, Harry Truman could be known as the worst president in US history - until Trump.

Over hyped...

The winter solstice conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn has been in the news for months. I have been telling people not to expect the "show" they keep hearing about. It was not really very bright and certainly wasn't a brilliant "Christmas Star" that was often promoted online. To the naked eye, you could barely see that Saturn was even there. While it was interesting that the two planets appeared so close together - other than that, it was just another over hyped dud of a celestial event (visually speaking). But I bet they sold a lot of telescopes this year. Video shot with a Canon Eos Rebel T3i mounted to a Meade LX90 telescope. Jupiter is pretty blown out exposure-wise in order to see some of its moons - and to be able to make out Saturn and its rings. Saturn and Jupiter are roughly the same size but Saturn is about 400 million miles further away and less than half the brightness of Jupiter. (It should be noted that I got sucked in to buying this telescope back in 2003 when the Mars being closest to the earth hype was all over the news.)

Here a few reasons why the Covid-19 vaccine is NOT a magic bullet to end the pandemic.

  

1.  While it has been shown through clinical studies that after 2 doses the Pfizer vaccine is over 90% effective in preventing serious complications for those who contract the disease, there is little evidence that it prevents the spread of the disease.  A vaccinated person may very well still be able to catch, carry, and transmit the virus to others.  Hundreds of millions throughout the world will need to get vaccinated before its' effectiveness at ending the pandemic will become apparent.  This is why sheltering in place, social distancing, and mask wearing are still a vital part of the plan.

2.  There are those who still believe (thanks to trump) that Covid-19 is not serious or perhaps just a political hoax to get Biden elected or an effort to take control of the population by getting people to start regularly accepting things like lockdowns or mask mandates.  These idiots will refuse the vaccine just as they have refused taking any of the suggested precautions.  

3.  Then there is the anti-vaxxer crowd who still think (despite all clinical evidence to the contrary) that vaccines are dangerous and cause other diseases such as autism - although their efficacy in eradicating diseases such as polio and measles is historically obvious.

4.  And unfortunately, there are still far too many complete whack jobs out there that are thoroughly convinced that vaccines are part of some vast conspiracy by the nefarious "new world order" to become masters of the population by causing things like sterilization or enabling mind control via a microchip in the vaccine that will be activated by the 5G network.

The question is...will enough people come to their senses and heed the advice of world health officials before the only option that remains is strict enforcement of deep reaching government mandates?

Space X had their second successful crewed launch last night with 4 astronauts on board.  Our Imposter in Chief of course tweeted that he should be given credit for the mission as he did last May when Endeavor brought 2 astronauts to the ISS.  It is well known that full credit for the commercial crew program at NASA belongs solely to the Bush and Obama administrations.  I would love to see the crew of the ISS reject a congratulatory call from trump but happily accept one from Biden  68,81,42,0,B

trump may very well have easily won a second term aside from all the bullshit that constantly spews from his pie hole had he done one thing: admit to the severity of the pandemic and do something about it rather than play it down and ignore it.  He blew off his one and only chance to be a true hero for the citizens of this country.  But no...he played his narcessistic trump card and lost the election as surely as he is losing all the numerous frivolous lawsuits in his pathetic bid to hold onto the only power he has left in his sad life.  Constantly claiming to be treated unfairly no matter how often you repeat it only goes so far when the facts are always against you.  Unfortunately, both he and his throngs of blind followers will forever cling to the mindless thought that the election of Biden was somehow a fraud.  Fortunately, there are a growing number of intelligent voters (and lifelong Republicans like myself) who have become tired of the GOP as it stands today in this country.
