A number of people have asked me how much wattage my new chest fridge draws when it's running and I have no idea. Just ordered the Kill A Watt meter to find out. The fridge is running off an inverter so it will be a good way to check my wattage and also the voltage drop from the long extension cord running from my battery house to the hut. John, I have a Kill-a-Watt, it's a great tool to have. It's really interesting to put a cost value against your daily used electrical items. I was accused of wasting electricity with my electric kettle (I'm a tea fan), but after a few days use we realized it wasn't anywhere nearly as bad as we thought.
JW - the "Owl" (http://www.theowl.co.za/) which we get in this country is attached to the mains-in wire - that way you are able to see all the energy you are consuming at any time. It also gives a daily and monthly total of energy used. And finally it also measures the carbon footprint for the power you have consumed.

We use the Berkey for filtration since it's gravity powered with excellent filtration. When I needed to get a new filter system, I wanted one that could also be used in an emergency, even without water pressure. But I can see why the sawyer would suit you better--you can just fit it to your tank that's collecting off the gutters and use as needed.
Can you extend the life of the elements by washing them or do they need replacement after x gallons?
...I see at Sawyer that they are "infinitely" reusable because they are fully washable. Why didn't I see these before I got the Berkey?

What size chest freezer did you buy for the conversion? My 5cu tends to run at 250Whrs each day. I've talked to other conversion owners and that is typical. You won't find a energy star upright that comes anywhere close to 50Whrs per cubic foot usually they are in the 115Whrs range.
Do you have enough energy excess energy for distillation? I bought a $160 Nutriteam electric distiller just to burn up our extra energy we have during the fall/winter/spring months. I'll have to figure something else out for the summer where we don't have any juice to spare.

Mikey...my conversion is using a 5cu.ft. freezer....thanks for the numbers to watch for. I got extra energy but will be using it for two more/larger swamp coolers for the container house and workshop, and ventilation and irrigation for the greenhouse - planning on a solar distiller as a future project.

You should note that the Kill-a-watt tells only how much energy is used. The Kill-a-watt EZ tells you how much it actually costs you.
