the eagle has landed...

Did the deed today...the Airstream followed me home.  White knuckled it for the first 20 miles then I felt confident nothing bad would happen.  The trailer pulled like a dream.  The last 2.5 miles was the worst - my washboard dirt road was magnified quite a bit pulling all that weight.  Got it parked and leveled in a spot for me to ponder the future interior...perhaps like this?  http://www.betterlivingthroughdesign.com/renovate/hofarc-airstream-renovation.html

Congrats on your big move. Looks like Benita is giving her approval.

Rule #1 of remodeling is that given enough time and money anything is possible.

Good on you John. Keep it simple, keep the small space big...

I'd bet you will have people beating down the Field Lab doors to get a chance to use it. Glad the trip went ok.

See Benita (or her horns) almost have the length of it...

That would look real good as a front room connected to the green house like a entrence to the green house. nice purchase .

There are so many ways to make that cool . If you connect it to the ends of the containers and close off the other ends yuo have just built a 2 bedroom house .

The beginning of a remodel is always the best part! I agree with Ben. KISS.

I'm glad you made it safely. It looks really great!

the 75th anniversary bambi had one of my favorite interiors:

I’m in the middle of restoring a 64 overlander and the interior is very similar to the link you posted, except no glass tile. that would be a bad option for an airstream that actually moves down the road

Nononono! I vote for passing on Ben's otherwise wise KISS strategy just this one time and using the more decadent SMOOCH approach for your Airstream rehab instead.

You should make it just like Matthew Hoffman's Stylish Mobile Ovoid Overland Coach Habitat. That bathroom is ridiculously wonderful for a trailer, except I'd advise a more hygienic & easier to clean surface than bamboo for the counter in there. Maybe AustinMod's right also that mosaics might not be the best choice for the shower if you're going to be towing it back & forth up into the Davis Mtns to get cool.

(And, ok, maybe the galley faucet might be overkill, too.)

But whichever direction you decide to take there's no dispute the Airstream presents a whole new avenue of outstanding possibilities for photo-ops with Benita. It isn't even possible to take a bad picture of that girl in the desert light, is it? I'm a teasip, but I do believe she's much more photogenic than her rival for the title of Texas' most famous longhorn, Bevo XIV.

(Speaking of which, wouldn't that be a great photo op: When Bevo Met Benita?)

JW, you are killing me here man. Meredith loves Airstreams and the desert. You keep showboating with iconic Texas dream photos and I am going to have to do something radical to keep her happy! Airstream is an awesome addition to the field lab.

If the Grub Shack does not believe the world is continuing and closes forever, you can roll the Airstream up there, setup the awning and sell beers to the locals.

I have followed your blog for a long time and really enjoy it.
One word of caution ,I lost an uncle and nearly an aunt in an air stream trailer. They are so tight that you have to think about ventilation . A bird built a nest in a vent and they were over come from fumes from a furnace.
Looks like a great project.
I will be watching closely

HofArc did a 1st class renovation of his Airstream, but I'm not sure it fits with the Field lab aesthetic...

John, you just keep on surprising me. I never in a million years woulda seen this coming. Good luck with whatever you have planned.

.....and stay cool my friend

@txriverrat sorry to hear about that. a good rule for sleeping in any trailer is always crack a window. I’m on my 4th airstream and removing the old furnace is usually one of the first things I do.

@rj, that airstream may have a/c but those things require a lot move current to run than a regular window unit. there is a co that offers a mini split heat pump that can run straight from 12volt with variable speed motor (the more sun there is the more cooling it will do) but it goes back to the thing where all sorts of possibilities open up with lots of $ to spend, they ain’t cheap.

What an iconic photo! It looks right at home at your place. I have an "Airstream Trailers" tab in my bookmarks, with several good links. The one you listed is an awesome conversion. I must agree that when remodeling, remember that they were meant to be towed down the road, and weight must be taken into consideration. I know that you probably have no plans to be taking it on the road, but you never know. I know whatever you do, it'll be top notch! Can't wait to show our new little Scamp 13' when we come down in November. It's definitely living small! Best of luck on the remodel.
