Days of Glory

The 1976 CCDS Cross Country Team (Left to Right): Top Row: Frank Whitney, Clay Clayborne, Ben Hunter, Eddie Green, John Wells, Peter Graham, Bruce Hamilton, David Hill, Ric Browning. Front Row: Assistant Coach Pete Fenninger, Bob McCloud, Woody Garland, Kevin Barnett, Scott Hamilton, Robert Thompson, Paul Trotter, Head Coach Bill Crowell

An old high school friend of mine recently posted a list on Facebook - the all time cross country records from Charlotte Country Day School for the 5,000 meter race.  Somehow my junior year time is still in the top 10 on the list.  Funny thing is I don't remember being particularly fast and certainly not dedicated at all to the sport of long distance running...or sports in general for that matter.  The only thing I really enjoyed about running was stopping.  If it wasn't for the fact that my high school required all students (unless they had a medical excuse) to try out for 2 varsity sports per year, I probably wouldn't have run cross country in the fall and track in the spring.  Not exactly sure how I could have attained a mention in the record books because looking back 40 years ago - I can remember a number of teammates who were faster than me.  I must have had one really good race that season...and I don't even remember it.  72,80,64,0,B

And Ben would look at you and say "Really? That's you, dad? I've never seen you move that fast." Have my yearbooks, but the time has passed that i care about old printed pages. Blessings to those we've lost, and cherish those we still have with us.

Isn't that the truth Rita.

That is amazing that you are standing next to a Green. He might be related to the Green people I knew from your neck of the woods. Small world.

I always placed 2nd in any school I attended and the the 1st place girl was always a year older than I was. But we did not have girls track in those days.

Yes I remember giving an impromptu speech at a University years ago and the young Clintons were there and said they liked what I said. And they both have done so much in their lives.

I shudder to think that I am like the older man in the t.v. add sitting on the park bench saying that a walk in the park might not really be such a walk in the park (he has trouble walking now evidently). But my little Chihuahua dog has a neck brace on now and we walk 5 times around the house twice a day and he runs like the wind too. So God has a plan. The dog and I exercise now.

Schools should get kids more involved in some kind of outdoor sport too many of them sitting on their butts playing video games

Agreed Mike. Even in the dry sauna, they are all on their electronic devices and even in the pool there are devices in their ear as they be bop around the pool.

Well, even if you can't remember it, congratulations.

Like John Well's High School, the Tomball Texas High School I attended (1950 thru 1954), also passed a new rule that all student athletes must participate in two sports. To insure this rule was respected - they also informed us we would not get our Letter Jacket - if we ignored this rule. I had lettered in football my 2nd and 3rd years as a defensive end, and badly wanted that third Senior year Letter Jacket - so I chose track as my alternative sport. Not being very swift - I chose the mile run. Best I could do - was finish 3rd in the mile run at the District Track meet - but I again earned that coveted Letter Jacket. ------ All my high school sports career did - was convince me to concentrate on my college education. My Chemical Engineering studies were rather difficult – and didn’t leave time for sports. But that earned BS degree in CHE in 1959 – was well worth the effort.

Distance was my calling in HS XC and track although for my Oregon HS. I did it voluntarily rather than because it was required. My older brother and sister ran and were good and since I hadn't the hand eye for other sports I followed in their footsteps. I went to state in XC a couple times and track once, Now I am curious to know if my name is on any dusty pages of records still...
