happy bees...

bee protest?

When I went to feed Ben this morning I found a swarm of bees in his trough.  That has never happened.  Pretty sure these guys were just passing by and dropped in for a drink and a swim (or perhaps to see what all the internet fuss was about) and not part of my local hive.  They were all gone by the time I had drained it down half way.  Decided it was the perfect excuse to clean out his big bowl.  Ben was quite curious about it once I tipped it up to dry out this evening.  He will be on his little bowl for a couple of days.  90,92,68,0,B

beeline

Beeline.  n. also bee-line, 1838, American English, from bee + line (n.), in reference to the supposed homing instinct of bees in the field.  TO LINE BEES is to track wild bees to their homes.  One who follows this occupation is called a bee hunter. [Bartlett, 1859]
Was pretty easy to track my bees from their water source back to their home...in a pile of tires in my junk yard.  Just watched which way they were coming and going and walked a short distance until I found the swarm.  Placed my old bee box on top of their tire condo.  From what I have read, lemongrass oil is a powerful attractant so I have some coming Monday.  Will they move into the penthouse?  82,85,54,0,W

bee moving day...

Julianne, the Official Field Lab Bee Keeper, came out this morning to move the bees out of their speaker box into a proper bee box. (video coming soon)  All went according to plan and hopefully they will settle into their new accommodations quickly.  They seem to be pretty chilled out and hopefully that will make for some extra sweet honey.  I got stung late this afternoon but barely felt it.  I like to think it was just a thank you for the new digs - they were pretty cramped in their old location.  91,101,71,0,B

B day...

Our resident piano tuner just happens to be a bee expert also.  She was called in to remove a hive that had evolved inside an old stereo speaker outside the house of a resident that is deathly allergic to bees.  She called The Field Lab and asked if I was interested in adopting them.  My first thought was bee stings - my second thought was Field Lab Honey...so I said sure,  prepped a rain cover for them, and she dropped them off.  75,98,73,0,B
