bigger is better...

Fought with the revamped solar fryer for a couple of hours.  Figured out why I abandoned the project 7 years ago - just not enough surface area.  The goal all along has been to cook a batch of Jiffypop with it.  Let's face it - Jiffypop is a show in itself and cooking it with solar is a win-win.  Just not enough sun bouncing back to create enough heat to pop...the oil needs to be 450° for the magic to happen.  Cashed in some Chupa mug bucks on paypal for a dish with roughly double the surface area.  Also ordered another 200 one inch mirrors as it will take about 600 to cover the bigger dish.  That video will have to wait a week or two.  87,91,48,0,B

smell the skin burn...

Had one of those excellent high UV days....where you think you can actually smell your skin burning. Finished rigging up the heat sync for the solar fryer and it seems to be in pretty good position. Had to trick myself into getting started on the next level for the big solar oven. Since I don't know what the final design will be - I just had to begin to see where it leads (that's the worst part of the process). Got an excellent jump on it. Have to finish it up so I can demo it at the Terlingua Green Scene on Saturday. http://www.terlinguagreenscene.com/ 75,100,49,0,C

R&D

Rather obsessed with solar cooking today in order to prep for the Terligua Green Scene demo coming up on April 10. Just couldn't wrap my brain around how to keep the cooking surface level as I tilted the dish for my satellite fryer. Searched all over the internet and didn't find exactly what I was looking for so I am just going to have to design it myself. Had to rig some parts to see how it worked and soon discovered it is just a parallelogram. Ordered 200 one inch diameter glass mirrors to glue to the dish surface. Good price and fast service - my mirrors got shipped the same day I ordered them. http://www.bjcraftsupplies.com/
Just one more thing to distract me - also started playing with one of my old bike wheel wind mills - good attention getters.....hope to fix up my Stepper Spinner to show off soon. It is featured in my very first YouTube video posted November 21, 2006. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxcMiXbxdTI 79,92,35,0
