Actually, this is a doctered gag photo. No computer ever had a stearing wheel, and CRT displays didn't replace teletype machines until very early 70's. If I remember correctly, the panel near the back was a WW2 era submarine helms station. The teletype near the front is from a ~68 era IBM 360 mainframe.

This took me back to my senior year of high school. I took a newly offered data processing class. That's pretty similar to what the computer looked like in my very dim memory. (minus the steering wheel I think)

My first computer was the IBM 1620.

The console typewriter predated those golf-ball typewriters, so it had this basket of lever-action type slugs (making up terminology as I go along here), driven by a little motor, and it made whacka-whacka sounds as each letter was typed. And a ding! zzzipp! when it got to the end of a line and the carriage returned.

Fortunately the one I used also had a line printer that could zap out a whole line of text at one whack. And a hollerith card reader so you didn't have to toggle your program in with the console switches. And 60,000 digits of memory core! Cool, huh?
