real food with Dr. Deb...

Fires are still burning near Alpine and north of Ft. Davis.  The big one that started Saturday is now 40% contained but has consumed over 100,000 acres.  http://bigbendnow.com/2011/04/three-major-fires-still-going-strong-0-contained/

Special overnight guest arrived at the Field Lab today...Dr. Debbie Tolman  http://www.debtolman.com/  She came all the way over from Clifton, Texas to trade info...me/solar - her/gardening.  I think I'm getting the better end of the deal...an invaluable resource for getting my greenhouse growing.  She brought a beautiful mix of greens from her gardens for supper tonight.

About 6 of my palo verde seeds look like they are coming to life.  Looks like sanding their edges and dowsing them with boiling water did the trick.

Just got an email from by buddy Dan Stricklin from Phillips Productions.  The Texas Country Reporter episode they shot here is finally available on YouTube.  http://www.youtube.com/user/texascountryreporter#p/u/0/GSEEX6Z8vcU   72,85,46,0,B

That was a great video, thanks for sharing.

I had thought of building a solar oven using radiant barrier. What material did you use? How hot can you get your oven?

Opps, too early for me, I spell like a Texan! Meant to say you are beginning to sound like a Texan.

Nice video. You are a rock star for sure....first NY times, now Texas Country Reporter....no mention of Benita though...that was a little disappointing. I guess she'll get over it.

Hi John
Congrats on the TCR spot. Makes me proud to say I have met you.
Up at www.lonestarbunker.com things got a little hot this weekend. My place came through it O.K. but three of the homes on our mountain were totaled. My solar HW panels got so hot that all the solder melted off. Just a few trailers and some equipment were destroyed so I'm lucky. I've posted some pictures on our blog.

John, I have looked forward to the Texas Country Reporter story. Excellent. And your poem is well said and sweetly delivered.

Your blog continues to be a daily visit, and a real delight.

I admire what you have done very much.

Really enjoyed the video, John. I've also appreciated the time you spend on your blog, sharing what you see and learn each day with the rest of us. Checking in with you and the wonders of west Texas has certainly become part of my evening ritual. I hope to meet you and visit the Field Lab one day soon! (and lest feelings get hurt, I'd like to meet Benita too!)

Ciao John, I read an article on the New York Times which reported your amazing new life. I'm really glad you are experiencing such wonderful days trying to live in armony with nature. Un caro saluto from Italy

I had to download the video to take to school to show my inner city Pasadena eighth graders (due to district filters.) Those boisterous early teens were, in educator parlance, "totally engaged."

Some were telling others about this guy out in West Texas. Now, that's high praise from my students. We're a school where those free lunches are incredibly important and the students are impoverished in experience as well as money.

They're wanting to see your blog. I'll be taking some screenshots so they can see how you do that, too. Thanks for inspiring us all! (By the way, I teach Math.)

Hi, John. Ok Hwa and I are just back from our annual trip to Korea, to visit her mom. I'm getting caught up on "back issues" of The Field Lab. We missed you over there. Her mom lives so far out that we couldn't get on-line.

This TCR episode is what got me following you several years ago. I never saw it myself 'til now, but a friend at work told me about it just after it first aired on TV. I investigated, and have been hooked ever since.

For those who follow the blog regularly, you can tell how long ago this was filmed. Much of the progress around The Field Lab over the last few years is nowhere to be seen in this video. Glad we got a chance to see it at last, though.
